Minimum Qualifications

    • Before you apply, you are required to: 
      • Be at least 18 years of age.
      • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident).
      • Have at least a High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma (GED), or a Journeyman's Certificate.
        • If you went to school outside of North America, you must provide an assessment from the Alliance of Credential Evaluation Services of Canada with your application.
      • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English under stressful conditions.
      • Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license or provincial/territorial equivalent without Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) status, with no more than six (6) demerit points and no current or pending suspensions.

      Qualifications         

      Before a candidate can be assigned to a recruit training class at Step ten (10) of the Firefighter Applicant Intake, they must have the following qualifications:
      • Advanced First Aid (AFA) certificate (or higher).
      • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate at the Health Care Provider level (CPR-HCP).
      • Alberta Class 3 driver’s license with an air brake (Q) endorsement (or higher).
      • Qualified candidates will be required to successfully complete a Wellness Fitness Initiative (WFI) treadmill test and a medical and fitness assessment and must be declared “fit for duty” by our medical professionals to qualify to begin recruit training.
      • Qualified candidates must also obtain a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate.
      Pre-employment Requirements
      You must be at least three (3) years clear from any criminal activity.  This includes:
      • Having no criminal charges pending before the courts.
      • Have been granted a pardon or record suspension for any criminal convictions.
      • Meet the drug use parameters below:
        • No more than one (1) soft drug use (such as but not limited to: marijuana prior to October 17, 2018, marijuana edibles, hashish, hash oil, mushrooms) within one (1) year of your application date (medical cannabis use will be reviewed during the CFD medical assessment that is conducted as a condition of a job offer at Step 10 of the process).
        • No more than three (3) soft drug uses within three (3) years of your application date.
        • No hard drug use (e.g. steroids, cocaine, meth, fentanyl) within three (3) years of your application date.
      • Meet all immunization requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

If you have any of the knowledge, skills, abilities or qualifications listed below from within or outside of Canada, include them in your application to make it more competitive.
  • Advanced First Aid (AFA) certificate (or higher).
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate at the Health Care Provider level (CPR-HCP).
  • Alberta Class 1, 2, or 3 driver's license with Air Brake (Q) endorsement, or provincial/territorial equivalent.
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree.
  • Journeyman Certificate.
  • Firefighter training.
  • Experience as a full-time firefighter; including military, seasonal, forestry, paid-on-call, volunteer.
  • Experience in emergency services or uniformed public service roles (law enforcement, EMS, military, corrections, park ranger, peace officer).
  • Cadet program (Fire, Police, Sea, Air, Army, etc).
  • Volunteering and/or community involvement (unpaid positions not including firefighting).
  • Fluent in languages other than English.
