One route to a career firefighter offer: the volunteer pathway. Here's what that timeline actually looks like.

Year 1–2: Join a volunteer department. Learn the basics. Get comfortable with apparatus, terminology, and the culture. This is your foundation — and it shows on your application.

Year 2–4: Stack your certifications. Firefighter 1 & 2. Emergency medical training if you don't already have it. Night classes, weekends, live burns.

Year 3–5: Start watching career hiring boards closely. Apply early. The process — written test, OFAI/FACT or CPAT, panel interviews, medicals — takes months per department.

Year 5–8: Most candidates on this path land their first career offer in this window. Some earlier, some later. It depends on the region, the openings, and whether your application package is ready when the door opens.

Not everyone goes the volunteer route — and that's fine. Military backgrounds, first responder experience, and fire college programs are all legitimate on-ramps.

But if you're in the volunteer pipeline right now, this is the window you're working with.

What stage are you at? Drop it in the comments. 👇

Nobody tells you what the first year on the job actually feels like.

You're the new person in a hall where everyone else has years of calls under their belt. You're learning where everything is, who runs what, and how this crew communicates — all while showing up ready to perform on real incidents.

It's humbling. Sometimes it's overwhelming.

You'll take a call that sticks with you. You'll make a mistake in front of your crew. You'll have a shift that goes perfectly and one that doesn't.

And somewhere in year one, it clicks.

The training starts to feel like muscle memory. You learn the rhythm of the hall. You stop feeling like you're proving yourself and start feeling like you belong.

That transition is what you're working toward.

Every application, every test, every rejection — it's all pointing here.

The hiring process for a career fire department doesn't move on your timeline.

Most candidates apply to 3–5 departments before landing an offer. Some more. That's not failure — that's the process.

The written test, physical testing, panel interview, psychological assessment, medical, and background check can take 6–18 months per department. And departments can go quiet for months between stages.

What separates candidates who get hired from candidates who give up:

→ They keep their fitness up between calls
→ They keep applying to new postings while waiting
→ They sharpen their interview skills after every rejection
→ They get their application package reviewed, not just submitted

The door is going to open. The question is whether you're ready when it does.

Save this for the days the process feels slow. 🔖

Twenty-five years ago today, 343 FDNY firefighters ran into the World Trade Center and didn't come home.

They didn't hesitate. They didn't turn back. They did what every firefighter trains to do — they went toward the danger so others could get out.

Every person who puts on the gear carries that with them. It's part of what this job means.

We remember them today and every day.
