But the right manual is the difference between guessing and knowing on a certification exam, and the right memoir will tell you what this job actually is before you spend years chasing it. Which of these do you actually need?
- Working toward NFPA 1001 (Fire Fighter I & II)? Essentials of Fire Fighting, 7th Edition is the core text almost every Canadian certification course is built on. The Course Workbook and Exam Prep are companions to it, not replacements.
- Already certified and specialising? Work from the discipline-specific IFSTA manuals below — hazmat, ARFF, driver/operator, inspection and code enforcement, fire and life safety education.
- Preparing for a firefighter aptitude test? None of these books will help you. The aptitude test is a timed cognitive and mechanical-reasoning exam, not a knowledge test on firefighting — it needs dedicated practice instead.
- Not certified yet and wondering if you need to buy anything? You usually do not. Most Canadian services expect certification, and the course supplies its reading — start with how to become a firefighter.

These are the manuals behind NFPA certification. If a pre-service program, recruit school or certification course hands you a required reading list in Canada, it is usually one of these. They are reference texts, not light reading — you work through them alongside a course.

Which book do I need for NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I & II?
Essentials of Fire Fighting, 7th Edition (IFSTA) is the core text that Canadian Fire Fighter I & II certification courses are built around. The Course Workbook reinforces each chapter and the Exam Prep title drills you for the written certification exam. You do not need all three — the textbook is the one that matters, the other two are practice.
Will reading these help me pass a firefighter aptitude test?
No, and this is the single most common mistake candidates make. The aptitude test (OFAI FACT, FireTEAM and similar) measures reading comprehension, mechanical reasoning, maths and spatial ability under time pressure. It does not test firefighting knowledge, so no amount of reading Essentials will move your score. Timed practice on the actual question types is what moves it.
Do I need to buy books before I apply?
Usually not. Most Canadian departments hire on certification, fitness, testing and interview — nobody asks which manuals you own. If you are enrolled in a pre-service or certification program, that program will tell you exactly which edition it requires, and buying ahead of it risks buying the wrong edition.
Where can I buy these?
The IFSTA manuals are sold directly by IFSTA and through fire-service booksellers; the trade titles are widely available from major bookshops and libraries. Check the edition number against what your course requires before you buy — editions change and courses are specific about which one they use.
Are these Canadian books?
The IFSTA manuals are American-published but are the standard texts used across Canadian certification, because Canadian certification is largely written against the same NFPA professional-qualification standards. Provincial requirements and the hiring process itself are Canadian, and those are covered in our own guides rather than in these books.
What Actually Gets You Hired
Books are the cheapest part of this process and the least decisive. Canadian departments hire on certification, fitness, a timed aptitude test and an interview — in roughly that order. If you only have time to prepare for one thing, prepare for the test that screens you out first.
