We are currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Fire Fighter/Primary Care Paramedic to join our Fire Division within the Protective Services Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

The City of Yellowknife Fire Division is a dual service, providing both firefighting and paramedic services to the community. Some of the duties may include:

  • Performs fire suppression duties
  • Provides emergency medical response and transport
  • Conducts rescue and extrication operations
  • Performs preventative maintenance on property, apparatus, and equipment
  • Participates in scheduled training (i.e. high angle, rope rescue, ice rescue, vehicle rescue)
  • Participates in fire inspections, public education, and life safety programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified applicants are required to have:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • A current Primary Care Paramedic license and registration from any Canadian jurisdiction (or equivalent)
  • Successfully completed National Fire Protection Association standards 1001 level I & II
  • A Class 3 driver’s license with airbrake endorsement with no current or pending suspensions
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to be respectful and inclusive at all times
  • The ability to work under potentially hazardous, physically, and psychologically demanding conditions.

Completion of NFPA 1002, 1072 Hazmat, 1006 Rescue and 1051 Wildland qualifications are considered assets.

SALARY AND PROGRESSION

The City of Yellowknife offers a starting salary of $83,631 per annum, along with a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined benefit pension plan, monthly vacation travel and vehicle allowances, shift premiums, and relocation assistance.

Career progression based on meeting minimum testing, technical and physical requirements:

  • Class IV Firefighter – Pay Rate: $83,631 - 0 to 12 months municipal experience
  • Class III Firefighter – Pay Rate: $89,207 - 12 to 24 months municipal experience
  • Class II Firefighter – Pay Rate: $100,357 - 24 to 36 months municipal experience
  • Class I Firefighter – Pay Rate: $111,508 - 36 to 48 months municipal experience

*2023 rates, current salary rates are under negotiation


CLASS MATCHING

Candidates with prior experience in a recognized fire service who previously held Fire Fighter class 4, 3, 2, or 1 may be considered for class matching for salary purposes only, provided that they meet all qualifications and criteria required by the City.
