Description

The City of Woodstock is seeking two Probationary Firefighters to join its Fire Suppression Division. This is a permanent, full-time, unionized position reporting to the Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, and Chief. The successful candidates will be joining a dynamic and growing organization known for its supportive team environment and commitment to serving the community.

Based in Woodstock, Ontario, the role involves a wide range of emergency response, public safety, and operational duties. New firefighters will undergo initial training with regular daytime hours before moving to a 24-hour rotating shift schedule. Duties and Responsibilities

Fireground and Emergency Operations:

  • Performs fire ground operations within an incident management system.
  • Performs rescue operations within an incident management system.
  • Performs hazardous materials and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear operations within an incident management system.
  • Provides emergency patient care to assess, stabilize, and transfer patients to emergency medical services.

Safety and Equipment Maintenance:

  • Performs firefighter safety practices according to legislation, standards, and department safe operating practices.
  • Operates and maintains fire apparatus such as engines, ladder trucks, aerial platforms, rescue trucks, and support vehicles as required by the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
  • Maintains fire equipment to ensure operational readiness, safety, and proper functioning.

Prevention, Inspection, and Public Education:

  • Participates in fire safety inspections to ensure premises meet safety standards as per the Woodstock Fire Department and the Ontario Fire Code.
  • Performs public education and public relations activities to promote community public fire and life safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Possess a valid DZ Driver’s Licence.
  • Possess an Ontario High School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified as a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Fire Fighter I and II from an accredited program at a recognized institution, and accredited by the International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board (must be complete with seals).
  • Possess a valid and current (within 3 years) Standard First Aid certificate and a valid 'Basic Rescuer' Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate (Level C) or better. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification would be an asset.
  • Possess valid and current Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OAFI) Candidate Testing Service (CTS) certificates for Stage One and Stage Two. (Stage Three is not required.)
  • Ability to meet screening requirements including, but not limited to, a Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Physically capable of performing all essential duties of a firefighter.
  • Proof of immunization for Red Measles, Mumps, Rubella (German Measles), Tetanus/Diphtheria (within last 10-12 years), Hepatitis B, and COVID-19 (current vaccination with booster preferred).
  • Visual Acuity Minimum Requirement: 20/30 corrected OR 20/40 uncorrected, both eyes tested together (OU), and no significant abnormalities in colour vision. (Testing completed as part of OAFI Stage Two.)
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively as a member of an effective and professional team.
  • Strong desire to serve the community, strong work ethic, sense of loyalty and duty, and willingness to follow instructions promptly and efficiently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Community service involvement.
  • University Degree, College Diploma, and/or Trade Certification recognized by the Ontario College of Trades in any discipline.
  • Emergency Medical Care Assistant (EMCA) designation.
  • Previous civilian or military experience in fire suppression, construction, trades, mechanical, emergency medical, large vehicle operation, fire prevention.
  • First Aid, CPR, and/or AED – certification at the instructor level.
  • Administrative and computer skills.

Additional Information

Salary Range: $66,927 (2024 rate)

Hours of Work: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday (up to first 8 weeks); 24-hour rotating shift upon shift assignment.
