Description

The City of Windsor is seeking dedicated individuals to join Windsor Fire & Rescue Services as Firefighters. This position offers an opportunity to serve a vibrant and diverse community while developing professional skills in a collaborative and supportive environment. As a Firefighter, you will play a crucial role in emergency response and public safety, working under the leadership of a Fire Captain. The City of Windsor values organizational excellence, community impact, and offers competitive benefits to support your career growth.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response: Respond in all types of weather and less-than-ideal conditions to fires, rescues, hazardous materials emergencies, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and other assigned emergencies.
  • Rescue Operations: Enter burning or contaminated buildings, structures, and other areas to stabilize or control emergencies and/or perform rescues.
  • Medical Assistance: Render first aid, perform CPR, and apply semi-automatic defibrillation as required.
  • Manual Handling: Lift various medical supplies, victims of unknown weight, tools, hoses, fire extinguishers, and other firefighting equipment as needed.
  • Vehicle Operation: Drive fire apparatus as assigned.
  • Site and Equipment Maintenance: Perform cleanup of sites, firefighting apparatus, equipment, and areas of the fire station.
  • Salvage and Prevention: Assist in salvage operations, fire prevention inspections, public education activities, and other fire department programs.
  • Training: Attend regular training sessions to practice existing and new firefighting skills, rescue methods, fire prevention, or other specialized procedures.
  • Community Engagement: Attend court, conduct station tours, and participate in public relations projects involving visits, demonstrations, and fire equipment/apparatus techniques.
  • Preparedness: Remain prepared at all times for demanding situations that may arise unexpectedly.
  • Occupational Health & Safety: Perform Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Other Duties: Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency

Medical and Physical Requirements:

  • Satisfactory medical assessment as outlined by NFPA 1582 for Fire Fighters
  • Completion of a Job Related Agility Test from a designated/recognized institution
  • Successful completion of aptitude, physical, and swim testing with a designated service provider

Licensing:

  • Current, valid, and lawful Class 'D' Driver’s License with 'Z' endorsement (as per Highway Traffic Act)
  • Provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment

Certification:

  • Valid and current Standard First Aid & Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate or equivalent from an approved provider

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to perform work requiring a moderate to very heavy level of physical effort

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education from a Community College or University in firefighting, skilled trades, construction, medical, or technical rescue fields
  • Experience in the medical field or construction industry
  • NFPA 1001 I & II certification

Additional Information

Salary Range: $69,650.85 - $107,155.15 annually

Hours of Work: 42 hours per week (shift work required)
