Description

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services is seeking highly motivated individuals to join its Firefighter - Reserve List for potential future firefighter opportunities. This department is dedicated to public safety, prevention education, protection, and wellness, and values integrity, honesty, and exceptional service.

As part of a dynamic team within the Fire Suppression Division, you will work in a shiftwork/24-hour schedule environment and contribute to the safety and wellbeing of the community. Candidates will undergo a comprehensive selection process and must demonstrate a strong commitment to public service.

Duties and Responsibilities

Firefighting and Emergency Response:

  • Respond to fire, rescue, medical, and other emergency calls as required.
  • Operate firefighting and rescue equipment safely and effectively.
  • Perform search and rescue operations in hazardous environments.
  • Provide emergency medical care as trained and required.
  • Participate in hazardous materials response.

Fire Prevention and Public Education:

  • Support fire prevention and public education initiatives as directed.
  • Assist with public safety demonstrations and educational programs.

Teamwork and Training:

  • Work collaboratively as part of a fire suppression crew.
  • Participate in ongoing training and skills development.
  • Maintain physical fitness and firefighting competencies.

Equipment and Station Maintenance:

  • Inspect, clean, and maintain firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • Contribute to station duties and ensure readiness of all gear and facilities.

Other Duties:

  • Comply with departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisors within the fire service.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Certifications:

  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and II, IFSAC or PRO-Board, including NFPA 1072 (previous 472) Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations; or in progress prior to November 21, 2025, with completion prior to May 21, 2026.
  • If applicable, OFMEM Grandfathering Letter for NFPA 1001 Level I & II requirements.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification, minimum Level C.

Licensing:

  • Valid Ontario Class 'DZ' License, unrestricted.
  • Current Drivers Abstract (within 30 days).

Medical and Physical Requirements:

  • Satisfactory hearing (as per testing criteria, without use of artificial aids).
  • NFPA 1582 vision requirements: 20/30 corrected or 20/40 uncorrected.
  • No significant abnormalities in colour vision.
  • Meet physical and medical standards, including medical assessment, acrophobia test, clinical assessment, tread water test, and physical ability test.

Other Requirements:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • No criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.
  • Ability to work shift work / 24-hour shifts (days, nights, weekends, holidays, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

Assets and Additional Training:

  • Emergency Medical Response Certification.
  • Completion of Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training Program at an OFM Endorsed Community College.
  • Completion of OFM Provincial Firefighter Curriculum Tests.
  • Additional NFPA/IFSAC/Pro Board Accredited Courses (e.g., Auto Extrication, Ice/Water Rescue, High Angle/Rope Rescue, Breathing Apparatus, Confined Space, Hazardous Materials, Critical Incident Stress Management, Land Radio Operator’s License, Basic Emergency Management, MED-A3).
  • Life Saving Certificates (e.g., 1st Responder, Basic Trauma Life Support, Defibrillator, Instructor’s Level First Aid, Emergency Medical Care Attendant, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard, Canadian Ski Patrol).
  • Professional experience in emergency services (fire, police, military, paramedic, etc.).
  • Skills or certifications in building construction, plumbing, electrical systems, mechanics, heavy duty equipment operation, emergency vehicle operation, radio communications, computer applications, teaching/coaching, athleticism, team building, and leadership.
  • Volunteer or community involvement in emergency services.
