The city of Toronto is currently looking for a 'Firefighter Fire Prevention' Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Area Captain, the Fire Prevention Inspector will perform, but not be limited to the following duties:


  • Conduct fire safety inspections, pursuant to the powers prescribed in the Fire Protection and Prevention Act on all types of buildings
  • Address Fire Code violations and fire safety hazards within the authority of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and applicable Regulations and Fire Marshal directives
  • Comply with all Directives issued by the Ontario Fire Marshal
  • Read and interpret building plans, blueprints, installation guides, construction plans and specifications as well as conducts inspections, pursuant to the requirements and powers prescribed in the Building Code Act
  • Prepare reports and maintain records detailing information about the property, violations observed and actions to be taken
  • Completes detailed notes, prepares written information and provides evidence through appearances in Provincial Offences Court, Fire Safety Commission, Coroner's Inquests and tribunals related to fire prosecutions
  • Exercise all powers as an assistant to the Fire Marshal prescribed in the Fire Protection and Prevention Act
  • Exercise all powers as a Provincial Offences Officer prescribed in the Provincial Offences Act
  • Review and recommends for the approval of Fire Safety Plans
  • Prepare and present seminars on fire prevention and safety to groups and members of the public
  • Deliver education programs related to fire safety

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Post-secondary education in Fire Protection Technology, Law and Security, Justice, Criminology or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Experience in note-taking and the preparation of reports, correspondence and record maintenance
  3. Experience conducting building and property inspections
  4. Experience in the installation and/or maintenance/design of sprinkler and fire alarm systems
  5. Experience in reading blueprints, installation guides, etc.
  6. Experience in delivering public education on fire prevention
  7. Knowledge of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Fire Code, Building Code Act, Ontario Building Code and Provincial Offences Act, OFM Technical and Public Fire Safety Guidelines and related standards and legislation
  8. Must possess strong mechanical aptitude
  9. Must possess a valid Ontario Driver's License Class "G" and meet the requirements necessary to receive a City Equipment Operator's License
  10. Able to walk long distances, wear personal protective equipment (including but not limited to SCBA and/or respirators) and climb ladders/scaffolding while conducting inspections in different environments, including post fire
  11. Excellent interpersonal/public relations/teamwork skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills
  12. Previous experience in dealing with the public in enforcement situations or experience in construction, architecture or engineering is an asset
  13. The following certifications are considered assets: NFPA 1031 (Ontario AHJ), NFPA 1035, BCIN (Fire Protection and General Legal)

Additional Information

As a condition of employment with Toronto Fire Services, selected candidates will be required to provide a CRIMINAL RECORD WITH JUDICIAL MATTERS CHECK (CRJMC) obtained from a police service in Ontario, to the satisfaction of Fire Services.
