Description

The City of Vernon is seeking two full-time Career Firefighters to join the Vernon Fire Rescue Services Department at Fire Hall Station 1. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Operations, these positions involve performing fire-fighting, rescue, medical response, hazardous materials response, fire prevention and education, and maintenance of equipment and facilities.

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about community service and emergency response, working collaboratively in a dynamic and dedicated team environment. The roles emphasize both operational excellence and public safety outreach.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergencies and perform fire-fighting, rescue, hazardous materials response, and first medical response activities as part of a team.
  • Equipment & Facility Maintenance: Assist in cleaning and maintaining fire and rescue equipment and facilities.
  • Training and Development: Participate in training and professional development activities.
  • Fire Prevention: Provide fire safety inspections and fire prevention activities.
  • Leadership: May lead small teams in the completion of tasks and/or training.
  • Community Engagement: Provide fire and rescue services, public education, and participate in public relations activities.
  • Committee Participation: Participate in committee work to provide programs for maintenance and long-term asset management.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively in a team environment with career and auxiliary firefighters, Emergency Social Services, City of Vernon Public Works, Ambulance, Police, non-government organizations, and other agencies.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Emergency Services Support: Assist the City in providing essential services during declared local states of emergency (e.g., flooding, earthquake), which may involve duties different from regular responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Certifications:

  • Post-secondary education in a field that provides excellent comprehension, writing and computer proficiency, administrative and organizational abilities, and increased learning capacity.
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter Level II, IFSAC or ProBoard accredited certificate.
  • First Medical Responder or equivalent certification.
  • Valid BC Driver's License, Class 3 with air brake endorsement or another province’s equivalent.

Experience:

  • Fire service experience, such as career or volunteer, military, wildland, or industrial fire suppression.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing work conditions.
  • High energy team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional problem-solving ability.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively during stressful situations.
  • Ability to learn and apply modern leadership and supervisory techniques and approaches.
  • Ability to manage exposure to disturbing stimuli (injured persons, fatalities, loud noises, etc.).
  • Service-oriented perspective and participation in volunteer and community service activities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and general office equipment.
  • Acceptable level of physical abilities required to perform the role.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an acceptable RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or equivalent.
  • NFPA 1002 General Requirements and Apparatus Equipped with Fire Pump, IFSAC or ProBoard accredited certificate.
  • Auto Extrication certification.
  • Confined Space Rescue Operations or Technician certification.
  • Hazardous Materials Technician certification.
  • Swift Water and Ice Rescue certification.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations certificate.
  • High Angle Rescue certification.

Additional Information

Hourly Rate: $57.07
Minimum Weekly Hours: 40

Location: Fire Hall Station 1, City of Vernon

Positions Available: Two (2) full-time positions

  2. Schedule your written exam and pay a $65.00 (USD) fee.
  3. Add the Vernon Fire Rescue Services Department job to your application.
  4. Create an account and complete checkout.
  5. Upload required documents to the NTN portal (cover letter, resume, 5-year driver’s abstract, FMR/EMR certification, copies of required certificates).
  6. Complete the written test by November 27, 2025.
  7. Complete pre-recorded video interview through NTN by November 27, 2025.
  8. Review application to ensure all documents have been uploaded and steps completed.

Application Deadline: November 28, 2025 (posting closes at 12:00AM, competition closes at 11:59PM the day prior)

Additional Requirements for Selected Candidates:

  • Attend a physical assessment in Vernon, BC (date TBD).
  • Be prepared for comprehensive medical testing as per NFPA 1582 guidelines.
