The Township of Springwater, located in Simcoe County, is seeking Volunteer Firefighters to join its Fire & Emergency Services team. This is a paid, on-call position designed for individuals looking to serve their community and take on challenging, physically demanding work.
Volunteer Firefighters play a vital role in emergency response, public safety, and community engagement across Springwater’s urban and rural areas. The position offers unique opportunities to gain valuable training and experience in fire services.
Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Response:
- Respond to fire, rescue, hazardous materials emergencies, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and other assigned emergencies in all weather and conditions.
- Enter burning or contaminated buildings and structures to stabilize or control emergencies and perform rescues.
- Render first aid, perform CPR, and apply semi-automatic defibrillation as required.
- Lift and carry medical equipment, victims, tools, hoses, fire extinguishers, and other firefighting equipment as needed.
- Drive fire apparatus as assigned.
Site and Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform clean-up of emergency sites, firefighting apparatus, equipment, and fire station areas.
- Assist in salvage operations.
Fire Prevention & Public Education:
- Assist with fire prevention inspections and participate in public education activities and other fire department programs.
- Conduct station tours and participate in public relations projects involving demonstrations of fire equipment and techniques.
Training and Professional Development:
- Attend regular training sessions to practice firefighting skills, rescue methods, fire prevention, and specialized procedures.
- Attend court as required.
Other Duties:
- Perform other related duties as required by the Captain or Fire & Emergency Services leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Licensing:
- Completion of a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class G driver’s license in good standing with a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to obtain a valid DZ driver’s license within 12 months of hire.
Screening & Physical Requirements:
- Successful completion of a Physical Agility Test encompassing various firefighting tasks.
- Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check acceptable to the Township of Springwater.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer firefighting experience.
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and/or II certification.
- NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator – Pumper certification.
- NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations with Mission Specific Competencies.
- Residency in Springwater or close proximity to a Springwater Fire Station.
Additional Information
Rate of Pay: Paid for training, attendance at calls, and duty roster. Eligibility for OMERS pension plan and health spending account after the first year and successful completion of recruitment training.
Hours of Work: On-call, variable hours depending on emergency response needs. Must meet minimum attendance requirements and be prepared for demanding situations at any time.
