The City of Kingston is seeking Volunteer Firefighters to join Kingston Fire and Rescue at several volunteer-based stations in the Kingston area. As a Volunteer Firefighter, you will play a vital role in responding to emergencies, supporting public safety, and serving your community.

Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Response:
- Respond to emergency calls including firefighting, rescue work, medical assistance, hazardous materials, and activated alarms.
- Support and participate in a variety of emergency situations within your assigned area.
Station and Equipment Maintenance:
- Maintain fire station, apparatus, and equipment.
- Perform station maintenance and ensure communications are operational.
Fire Safety and Community Engagement:
- Promote fire safety through educational programs, displays, and distribution of promotional materials supplied by the Fire Department.
Training:
- Attend regular weekend, weekly, and mandatory training sessions.
- Complete a recruit training program involving one evening per week and one day on weekends.
Other Responsibilities:
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 diploma or acceptable equivalent (verification required).
- Licensing: Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license with a clean driving record (0 demerit points) and ability to obtain and maintain a DZ driver’s license within 18 months of completing recruit training.
- Residency: Must physically reside within the immediate area of the specified fire stations (to be validated).
- Training Commitment: Willingness and availability to complete approximately 24 weeks of recruit training.
- Physical Requirements: Physically fit and able to meet prescribed hearing and vision requirements of NFPA 1582 (20/30 in each eye without corrective lenses and color vision for firefighting).
- Language: Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently and communicate clearly under pressure.
- Availability: Available on short notice, able to work flexible hours, and willing to work in all weather conditions.
- Medical and Background Checks: Satisfactory medical assessments and ability to obtain/maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check), including Vulnerable Sector.
- Attendance: Maintain a satisfactory call and training attendance of 35% for weekly training and emergency calls annually after training completion.
Preferred Qualifications
Assets and Preferred Experience:
- Experience and/or training in firefighting, emergency medical response, or a licensed trade.
- Background or knowledge of technical trades, safety practices, or Occupational Health and Safety training.
- Experience coaching, counseling, or educating the public.
- Demonstrated motivation as a team player and enjoyment of public service.
Additional Information
Certification Upon Completion: Successful completion of the recruit training program will result in certification under NFPA 1001 Level 1, NFPA 1001 Level 2, and NFPA 1072 Hazmat Operations (in alignment with O. Reg. 343/22: Firefighter Certification effective July 1, 2026).
Training Schedule: Recruit training primarily occurs one evening per week (1900-2130) and one day on weekends (0800-1600).
