The City of Kawartha Lakes is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Firefighter to join its Fire Services Department - Support Division. This position is essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of the community by responding to suppression and emergency call-outs and attending mandatory fire training. As a Volunteer Firefighter, you will work under the supervision of the District Chief and collaborate with the Volunteer Station Coordinator. Despite being a volunteer role, this position offers remuneration for services rendered and entails responsibilities comparable to those of full-time firefighters.
The Volunteer Firefighter role requires a strong commitment to community service, compassion, and a willingness to perform physically demanding tasks. Applicants should be prepared for extensive training and the need to respond to emergencies while adhering to safety protocols. This position is crucial in maintaining the operational readiness of the Fire Services team and providing critical support during emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
- Respond to suppression and emergency call-outs in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and in adverse weather conditions.
- Wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and perform strenuous physical activity.
- Lift, carry, and set up equipment and materials on scene.
- Operate pressure pumps and hoses.
- Crawl, climb, and carry ladders.
- Operate rescue equipment and perform salvage and ventilation work at fire scenes.
- Provide first response medical assistance to the injured.
- Work in a team environment as per established policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Perform hall duties including washing trucks, maintaining equipment readiness, and cleaning gear.
- Participate in promotional and community events, including Peer Support and Mental Health initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing; ability to obtain a Class “D” Licence with “Z” endorsement within one year.
- Completion of Pre-Service Firefighter program or related training is an asset.
- Physical strength and agility to perform demanding tasks and operate firefighting equipment.
- Ability to support and project compatible organizational values.
- Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with effective conflict resolution skills.
- Willingness to attend training and perform tasks in fire extinguishing and rescue operations.
- Previous related experience or training, including First Aid/CPR certification, is an asset.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in emergency situations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Driver’s Abstract required upon verbal offer of employment.

Additional Information:
- Wage: $26.85 per hour (2026).
- Applicants must reside within 15 kilometers of an assigned fire station.
- Must be available for emergency responses and mandatory training sessions governed by CUPE 5453 Collective Agreement.
- Recruitment process includes skill, physical, and knowledge testing, followed by 100 hours of unpaid online training and 180 hours of in-person practical training.
- Completion of certifications including NFPA 1001 Level 1, Level 2, and NFPA 472 Hazmat Operations and Awareness required.
