Jasper Fire Department is a progressive, innovative, and dynamic emergency services department committed to effectively managing fire and rescue emergencies. The department provides the highest level of emergency services possible in a safe, professional, and timely manner by emphasizing training, emergency response, public education, and fire prevention. The Jasper Fire Department provides fire protection and rescue services to the citizens and visitors of the Municipality of Jasper and Jasper National Park. Services include structural fire suppression, vehicle fire suppression, motor vehicle collision response, dangerous goods response, medical first response, and wildland-urban interface structural protection. The department operates with a full-time Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Captain of Training and Development, Captain of Prevention, and a Protective Services Coordinator, supported by up to 30 volunteer firefighters from diverse backgrounds. The department's response area includes Jasper National Park and extends sixty kilometres into British Columbia along Highway 16. The department values leadership, teamwork, education, pride, integrity, safety, and accountability. The role of Volunteer Firefighter is primarily a trainee position, with opportunities for advancement and skill development through structured training and orientation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Attend and participate in all scheduled orientation training (one evening per week plus one weekend day per month, for three months)
- Become familiar with and adhere to departmental policies and procedures
- Become familiar with department equipment and apparatus
- Maintain and care for all department-issued personal equipment
- Adhere to WCB regulations, OH&S regulations, and promote a safe working environment
- Report to the training officer, company officers, or senior firefighters as assigned
- Achieve maximum attendance at all orientation training sessions
- Complete additional self-study and familiarization above classroom time
- Once promoted to Probationary Firefighter, attend at least 60% of regular training events (Tuesday evenings)
- Once promoted to Probationary Firefighter, attend at least 30% of emergency call outs
- Commit to further training to obtain NFPA level certifications
- Uphold the minimum requirements and expectations as outlined by the department, including maintaining physical ability, proper conduct, and active participation
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be a permanent resident of Jasper
- Must be a Canadian citizen, holder of a Permanent Resident Card, Landed Immigrant, or otherwise legally entitled to work in Canada (e.g., worker's visa)
- Must have a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Must have a valid Alberta Driver’s License (minimum of Class 5 – GDL is acceptable), with no current suspensions or charges pending
- Must be able to present a favourable criminal record check
- Must possess the mental and physical health to carry out the duties of a firefighter adequately
Preferred Qualifications
- Current Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and AED certification
- Previous firefighting training
- Employment within the townsite
- Ability to commit to a minimum of 3 years’ service
- Employer's support for joining the Fire Department and ability to respond to emergencies during working hours
Additional Information
The Jasper Fire Department is a composite fire service (full-time and volunteer), and volunteer members do not receive monetary compensation for training events or responding to incidents.
Each firefighter is insured under the Volunteer Fireman’s Insurance Services (VFIS), including injury, liability, and life insurance. Other benefits and incentives are provided upon hire. Volunteers gain valuable hands-on training and experience at no financial cost and attain certifications recognized internationally.
The recruitment process takes approximately two months and includes application, interview and reference checks, fitness testing (CPAT), selection including medical and mental health clearance, and a conditional offer with a three-month orientation and a twelve-month probationary period.
All new members must complete at least NFPA 1001 – Level 1 training within two years (training provided at no cost). Applicants must submit a completed application form, proof of minimum requirements, certifications, a current resume with at least three references, a criminal record check (with vulnerable sector, within 30 days), and a driver’s abstract (within 30 days).
