Description
The City of Pembroke Fire Department is seeking applications for the position of Probationary Firefighter. This role offers an excellent opportunity for physically fit, team-oriented individuals who are committed to public service. Firefighters in Pembroke perform a range of duties beyond fire suppression, including prevention, education, rescue, medical response, and equipment maintenance.
Teamwork, adaptability, and a willingness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, are essential. The position requires living and working in close quarters and maintaining a high level of professionalism at all times.
Duties and Responsibilities
Firefighting and Emergency Response:
- Respond to fires, emergencies, rescue situations, and hazardous materials incidents
- Provide medical assistance at emergency scenes
- Conduct search and rescue operations
- Operate firefighting equipment and vehicles
- Participate in fire suppression and containment activities
Fire Prevention and Public Education:
- Assist with fire prevention education and outreach initiatives
- Engage with the public to promote fire safety
Apparatus and Equipment Maintenance:
- Maintain and inspect firefighting apparatus and equipment
- Clean and inspect personal protective equipment
- Perform vehicle maintenance and regular housekeeping at the fire station
Training and Professional Development:
- Participate in ongoing training, drills, and skill development activities
- Maintain proficiency in radio communications and basic computer skills (Word, Outlook)
Teamwork and Station Life:
- Live and work with team members in close quarters
- Participate in station maintenance and cleaning duties
- Follow orders, procedures, and chain of command
- Interact harmoniously with co-workers, superiors, and the public
- Present a professional image and uphold the reputation of the Fire Department
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Grade 12 diploma or acceptable equivalent
- N.F.P.A. 1001 Firefighter I & II, HazMat 1072 or 470 operations level
Experience:
- Previous experience and/or training in firefighting, emergency medical response, or a licensed trade
Licenses:
- Valid Ontario Class DZ driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
Testing and Assessments:
- Completion of written aptitude and psychological tests by Firefighter Services of Ontario
- Completion of the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) within the past 12 months or willingness to complete it
Medical and Legal Requirements:
- Meet NFPA prescribed hearing and visual requirements (uncorrected acuity 20/100 binocular, corrected acuity 20/30 binocular, and colour vision safe for firefighting)
- Obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check) and Vulnerable Sector Search
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Live or agree to live within 15 driving kilometers of the Pembroke Fire Station in Ontario
- Pass a satisfactory medical examination as per City of Pembroke requirements
Skills and Competencies:
- Ability to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and statutory holidays
- Ability to handle intense and sustained physical effort
- Excellent listening and communication skills in English
- Ability to adhere to chain of command and interact harmoniously with others
- Demonstrate corporate competencies: customer focus, results orientation, integrity, and teamwork
- Basic computer skills (Word, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Certifications and Experience:
- Pre-entry Firefighter Certification
- Experience in coaching, counseling, or public education
- Knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, mechanics, carpentry, or safety practices
- Training in Occupational Health and Safety
- Additional language skills beyond English
Additional Information
Salary: 2025 Probationary Firefighter salary is $67,638.42 annually (2026 rate under review)
