Description

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is seeking full-time Suppression Firefighters to join Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire & Emergency Services (WSFES). As an award-winning employer, Stouffville prides itself on fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace for all employees.

Suppression Firefighters are essential team members responsible for protecting lives and property in a dynamic and growing municipality.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fire Suppression: Operate and maintain fire apparatus and equipment; perform fire ground operations to suppress fires.
  • Hazardous Material Operations: Respond to and manage dangerous goods emergencies and perform hazardous material operations.
  • Rescue Operations: Perform rescue work including auto extrication and water rescue.
  • Emergency Medical Aid: Provide emergency medical care to individuals in need.
  • Fire Prevention: Participate in public education, inspections, and code enforcement activities; develop pre-incident plans.
  • Station and Equipment Maintenance: Maintain fire equipment, stations, and grounds.
  • Professional Development: Demonstrate commitment to personal and professional growth and participate in relevant training.
  • Administrative Duties: Perform necessary administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Team Collaboration: Work as part of a dynamic team, following chain of command under the supervision of a fire suppression captain.
  • Other Duties: Complete other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Age: Minimum 18 years at time of application
  • Legal Status: Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Education: Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent

Licensing & Certifications:

  • Driver’s License: Valid Ontario Class “D” with “Z” endorsement and less than 4 demerit points (driver’s abstract required)
  • NFPA Certifications: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I and II (Pro Board Seal or IFSAC proof)
  • Hazardous Materials: NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations certification (Pro Board or IFSAC seal proof required)
  • First Aid: Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) or Emergency Fire Responder (EFR) certification

Other Requirements:

  • Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English (verbal and written)
  • Fitness: Successful completion of fitness and medical testing (York University)
  • Swimming: Proficiency in swimming (Ontario Fire College Surface Water Rescue / Ice Rescue Swim Test conducted by WSFES)
  • Physical Ability: Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and use supplied safety equipment
  • Work Schedule: Ability to work 24-hour rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays (shift pattern may be adjusted in the first year)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field
  • Certifications: Additional NFPA courses and/or certifications related to suppression firefighter
  • Medical Training: Advanced medical training
  • Pump Operations: NFPA 1002 Pump Operations
  • Firefighting Experience: Previous or current volunteer, paid on call, or career suppression firefighter experience
  • Residency: Resident of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville

Additional Information

Salary: $64,347 (2025) as per the collective agreement

Employment Status: Full-time, Permanent (Unionized Local 4152)

Number of Positions: 4

Scheduled Hours: 42 hours per week

Probation: 12-month probationary period applies
