Description

The City of Ottawa is seeking dedicated individuals to join Ottawa Fire Services as Rural Firefighters. As part of the emergency response team, Rural Firefighters play a vital role in protecting the lives, property, and environment of Ottawa's citizens and visitors. This is a casual position that requires a commitment to public safety and participation in emergency response operations.

Rural Firefighters are integral members of Ottawa Fire Services, responding to emergencies and participating in ongoing training and community involvement. The role requires physical fitness, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively within a team in challenging and high-pressure situations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response: Respond to fire, medical, and other emergency incidents to protect lives, property, and the environment.
  • Teamwork: Work effectively within a team environment, positively interacting with a diverse workforce.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate and troubleshoot firefighting equipment and assess emergency situations.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow the Chain of Command and comply with applicable health and safety legislation and procedures.
  • Public Assistance: Provide customer service and assistance to the public, Fire Services staff, and City personnel.
  • Training: Participate in weekly training sessions and respond to calls as required.
  • Professionalism: Maintain high standards of professionalism, integrity, reliability, and credibility at all times.
  • Uniform and Equipment: Properly wear and use issued uniforms, personal protective equipment, and safety systems, including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus when necessary or directed.
  • Problem Solving: Apply problem-solving and analytical skills in emergency and operational contexts.
  • Community Involvement: Demonstrate commitment to volunteerism and participation in community events and initiatives.
  • Report Completion: Utilize computer and technology skills for report writing, training, and emergency operations.
  • Personal Development: Commit to ongoing learning, training, and professional development.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or academic equivalent diploma.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must live and/or work in close proximity to a rural fire station.

Certifications and Licences:

  • Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of the Chain of Command and ability to follow it at all times.
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including worker rights and duties.
  • Physical fitness and ability to handle sustained, intense physical, emotional, and mental effort.
  • Willingness and ability to work in challenging, adverse, and dangerous conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively under stress.
  • Mechanical aptitude for equipment operation and troubleshooting.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Initiative and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer and technology skills.
  • Commitment to volunteerism and community involvement.
  • Commitment to ongoing training and education.
  • Maintains professionalism, integrity, reliability, and credibility.
  • Ability to attend weekly trainings and calls as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skills and abilities acquired through related work such as trades, other emergency services, relevant training, and educational programs.

Salary Information: $20.389 - $25.494 per hour (2025 rates of pay)
