Description
The City of Pickering is seeking dedicated and motivated individuals for the role of Probationary Firefighter. This full-time, permanent position is an opportunity to serve the Pickering community by responding to emergency incidents and supporting public safety initiatives.
As part of the Fire Services team, the successful candidate will respond to emergencies, conduct fire prevention activities, and participate in ongoing training and community outreach. The role involves working within a supportive, inclusive, and diverse workplace committed to excellence and public service.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Fire Ground Operations: Perform fire suppression, salvage, and overhaul activities in accordance with Standard Operating Guidelines and current training practices.
- Specialized Rescue Operations: Execute automobile extrication, rope rescue, water and ice rescue according to guidelines and training.
- Emergency Medical Care: Provide emergency medical care in line with industry standards.
- Public Education & Fire Prevention: Participate in fire prevention and public education programs, including presentations, activities, and demonstrations.
- Training: Engage in and complete all assigned training activities.
- Pre-Incident Planning: Assist Captain with pre-incident planning surveys and inspections.
- Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance: Conduct vehicle and equipment maintenance following established practices.
- Station Duties: Perform daily cleaning and maintenance to ensure good housekeeping in the station.
- Other Duties: Additional responsibilities as outlined in the official job description provided to interview candidates.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Certification:
- Successful completion of secondary school education
- Post-secondary certificate in a Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training Program from a recognized College, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience
- NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter Level I and Level II, IFSAC or Pro Board Certificate
Testing & Physical Fitness:
- Must be medically and physically fit to perform prolonged and/or dangerous work, meeting the job's agility requirements
- Valid and current Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Service (CTS) Stage One, Two, and Three, including the Swim Test (all certifications valid through January 9, 2026)
Licences & Certifications:
- Valid Class "D" Ontario Driver’s Licence with “Z” endorsement
- Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR-C certificates
Other Requirements:
- Consent to Driver’s Abstract
- Willingness to participate in Emergency Medical Responder training and computer-based training
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
- Prepared to undergo a Criminal Reference check
- Willingness to work on rotating 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous emergency services experience
- Clean driving record
- Knowledge of Pickering's geographical street locations, municipal buildings, and fire hydrant locations
- Proficiency in use of personal computers and Windows-based applications
- Ability to safely operate mechanical equipment, including hydraulic, electrical, and hand tools
Additional Information
Salary: $66,751.80 (2024 rates)
Work Hours: 24 hour shift system, including weekends and holidays
