Description
The City of Kenora is seeking up to four (4) Probationary Firefighters to join the Fire & Emergency Services team. This position involves performing skilled and physically demanding work in emergency situations including firefighting, rescue, and first aid.
Probationary Firefighters are responsible for responding to a variety of emergency calls, participating in fire prevention and public education, and maintaining fire equipment and facilities. The role works under the supervision of senior officers but may require independent judgment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Firefighting & Rescue: Performs fire ground and rescue operations as a member of a shift or platoon.
- Emergency Response: Responds to emergency calls; lays and connects hoses; holds nozzles and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses extinguishers and other equipment; ventilates buildings to release heat, smoke, and gases.
- First Aid & Patient Care: Removes persons from danger and administers first aid to injured individuals; follows firefighter safety practices.
- Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Operates and maintains fire apparatus and equipment; drives and operates firefighting apparatus as assigned; performs varied maintenance tasks on apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
- Fire Prevention & Inspection: Participates in fire safety inspections; performs inspections and assessments related to fire prevention duties.
- Training: Participates in all in-service and specialized training as offered.
- Teamwork & Communication: Works as a team player and communicates effectively with colleagues and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Must possess a grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Certification: Completion of NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 and 2 Certification.
- Licensing: Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License with acceptable drivers abstract.
- Physical Condition: Must be in good physical condition and able to pass a medical examination.
- Attributes: Mental alertness, mechanical aptitude, ability to work well with others, and function as a team player.
- Communication: Ability to follow and communicate effectively with written and oral instructions.
- Public Interaction: Ability to deal effectively with the public in a variety of situations.
- Training: Must participate in all in-service and specialized training as offered.
Preferred Qualifications
- First Aid & CPR: Valid and current First Aid and CPR certificate considered an asset.
Additional Information
Salary: $66,162.00 (Probationary Rate for 6 months)
Hours of Work: As per collective agreement
Location: Kenora, Ontario
