The Town of Oakville is seeking new Probationary Fire Fighters to join the Oakville Fire Department. This is a permanent, full-time position within the department, offering the opportunity to protect life and property while serving the Oakville community.
Working as part of a dynamic team in an Incident Command System environment, Fire Fighters are responsible for emergency response, fire suppression, and public safety education. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, strong teamwork, and a desire to serve the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
Core Duties:
- Protect life and property through firefighting, emergency medical, and other emergency incident response.
- Perform duties in environments that require strenuous physical exertion and under potentially hazardous conditions.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public and act as a leader in public fire safety education.
Teamwork and Station Responsibilities:
- Work cooperatively as part of an effective and professional team.
- Live and work together in close quarters throughout 24-hour shifts, sharing routine tasks at the fire station.
- Support and assist other agencies and the public as required.
Professionalism and Communication:
- Maintain a high standard of professionalism and organizational skills.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
- Communicate effectively in high-pressure and stressful situations, both orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Successfully completed NFPA 1001 - Fire Fighter I and II certified education and training program from an accredited institution or fire department.
- Possess valid Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent.
- Possess valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Successful completion of either the Lifesaving Society's Canadian Swim to Survive Standard or the OFAI swim test.
Licenses and Records:
- Valid and unrestricted Ontario class "D" driver’s license with a "Z" air brake endorsement.
- Driving record with fewer than 6 demerit points; applicants with 6 or more are ineligible.
- Satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (dated within the last 30 days at job offer stage).
OFAI Candidate Testing Service:
- Possess OFAI Candidate Testing Service Stage 1, 2, and 3 certificates as specified:
- Stage One Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (expired valid certificates accepted).
- Stage Two Hearing Assessment (current and valid at posting closing date).
- Stage Two Vision Assessment (current and valid at posting closing date).
- Stage Two Encapsulated Treadmill Test (current and valid at posting closing date).
- Stage Three Firefighter Physical Aptitude Test (FPAT) (current and valid at posting closing date).
- Stage Three Firefighter Technical Skills Assessment (current and valid at posting closing date).
General Requirements:
- Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English under stressful conditions.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a professional team.
- Strong desire to serve the community and strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
Education and Training:
- Post-secondary education.
- NFPA Operations or Technician Level Certificate in rope rescue, confined space rescue, water/ice rescue, hazmat response, or other relevant NFPA certifications.
Experience and Skills:
- Experience in fields related to emergency services (e.g., dispatch, volunteer or professional firefighter, paramedic, police, military, medical care, social services, skilled trades, heavy equipment operation).
- Multi-lingual skills (ability to communicate in additional languages).
- Trade apprenticeship or certification.
- Emergency Medical Responder certification.
- Other relevant specialized training, qualifications, or experience.
Community Involvement:
- Commitment to volunteerism and community involvement as demonstrated by experience volunteering in social/civil/community events and initiatives, non-profit organizations, counselling, and crisis intervention.
