As a Recruit Paid Per Call Firefighter you will be working as part of a team under the direction of the Fire Services division. Paid Per Call Firefighters provide a first response for fire suppression, rescue and specialized operations as required in the Town of the Blue Mountains. Upon completion of the recruit class, Recruit Paid Per Call firefighters attend training on a weekly basis (every Monday evening) to continually develop new skills, maintain current skills and advance through the Paid Per Call firefighter levels in accordance with all regulatory requirements and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Must be able to successfully complete a candidate physical assessment test (CPAT) provided by the Town of the Blue Mountains Fire Department.
- Must be able to meet the minimum performance levels for Training Attendance (75%) and Emergency Response Attendance (33%) on a biannual basis.
- Firefighters are required to attain all required Certifications applicable to their positions and will be required to attend courses periodically with The Blue Mountains Fire Department and with external training partners, which may require travel and/or online completion.
- Attend regular weekly training sessions (Monday evenings) and complete assigned and self-directed online training assignments on our Learning Management System (LMS).
- Must possess and maintain the physical strength and agility to perform arduous duties and to competently operate all firefighting/rescue apparatus and equipment and all safety equipment under all types of adverse conditions frequently and for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to effectively communicate in English both orally and written.
- Must be able to work in a highly structured work environment and follow rules, regulations and procedures of the Blue Mountains Fire Department. Ability to make decisions and to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Perform firefighting, rescue and training operations within the Town of The Blue Mountains Fire Department incident management system, so that lives are protected and property loss and damage to the environment is minimized including but not limited to:
- Recognizing hazards to prevent injuries to patients or rescuers
- Securing water supplies
- Operation of hose lines
- Operating portable pumps
- Operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment
- Performing search and rescue operations
- Carrying, positioning, raising and climbing ground and aerial ladders
- Ventilate structures
- Extinguish vehicle, structural, ground fires
- Conduct salvage operations
- Overhaul fire areas
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Perform vehicle extrication
- Perform components of Technical Rescues as directed
- Identifying and assist in securing areas of structural collapse
- Performs land-based water rescue.
- Provide emergency patient care
- Perform firefighting operations in hazardous environments
- Perform public education duties and attend community events as required such as:
- Attend fire prevention week activities
- Assist with fire safety messaging in the community
- Annual parade and community events
- Annual Fire Department Open House
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum education requirement is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or approved equivalent.
- All uncertified applicants must be able to obtain all required certifications in accordance with Ontario Regulation 343/22 Firefighter Certification, within prescribed timelines.
- You must live within an acceptable distance for the response area that you are applying to (3 – 5-minute drive from the closest Fire Station)
- Must possess a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License at the time of application and must be maintained throughout the entire process.
- Successful applicants must be able to obtain an Ontario Class “DZ” License within 24 months of the hire date.
- Successful applicants shall provide a current Driver’s Abstract to the Town of the Blue Mountains upon offer of employment.
- Applicants shall complete 100% of all online assignments and attend 100% of all in person Recruit training dates. One exception may be made for extenuating circumstances, at the sole discretion of the Deputy Chief. These dates will be provided to all applicants prior to the interview process. If an applicant cannot make these commitments, they may be removed from the process.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification to the following is preferred:
- NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications I and II.
- NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials / Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, Operations Level or above.

Hours of Work:
- Available to respond as a volunteer Firefighter to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (must attend a minimum of 50% of emergency responses)
- Weekly training sessions Monday evenings 19:00 lasting approximately 2 hours
- On call weekends and holidays approximately 1 in 5
The submission deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m. on July 31st, 2025.
Interviews will be scheduled for August and September. The online training will begin in October and the new recruit class will start January 2026.
