The Township of King Fire & Emergency Services is currently accepting applications for Paid On Call Firefighters for the 2026 recruitment cycle. As a valued member of a composite fire department serving approximately 28,000 residents across three stations, you will join a team dedicated to public safety and excellence in emergency response.
Being a Paid On Call Firefighter offers a rewarding opportunity to develop new skills, work as part of a team, and serve your community in a vital capacity. Successful candidates will undergo comprehensive recruit training and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Response:
- Respond to structure fires, vehicle fires, wildland fires, motor vehicle collisions, medical emergencies, public hazard incidents, and technical rescues.
Training:
- Participate in in-house recruit training covering Emergency Medical First Responder, NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, and NFPA Firefighter Level 1 and Level 2, including live fire scenarios.
- Attend a minimum of 80% of maintenance training sessions.
- Commit to ongoing training and meeting certification requirements for each classification year.
Teamwork and Operations:
- Work as part of a crew and attend scheduled training, vehicle/equipment/station inspection, and maintenance.
- Fulfill summer stand-by commitment as assigned.
- Maintain high standards of customer service, empathy, and professionalism.
Compliance:
- Respond in a timely manner to emergency calls, including weekends and holidays.
- Maintain required attendance at emergency and non-emergency incidents (minimum 30%).
Additional Duties:
- Participate in scheduled public events and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- Age: 18 years of age or older
- Legal Status: Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Education: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or academic equivalent
- Criminal Record: Be criminal record free unless a pardon has been granted under the Criminal Records Act (Canada) with Vulnerable Sector Screening and has not been revoked
- Availability: Able to respond in a timely fashion, including weekends and holidays
- Driver’s License: Valid class G license with satisfactory driver’s abstract dated no earlier than three months prior to application
- Physical/Mental Fitness: Able to perform the duties of a firefighter physically and mentally, with regard for personal and public safety
- Language: Able to understand and communicate clearly in English, both oral and written
- Medical Screening: Satisfactory medical screening by a licenced physician using the King Fire & Emergency Services medical package (for interviewees)
- Immunization: Current immunization record for Mumps, Measles, Rubella, Polio, Diphtheria, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus
- Residency: Proof of residence within 6 km of a King Fire & Emergency Services Fire Station
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Assets:
- NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness
- NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II
- Ontario D-Z Driver’s License
- Standard First Aid and CPR level HCP (Health Care Providers)
- Daytime availability/shift work experience
- Post-secondary education
- Specialized skills/trades
- Work experience
- Previous firefighting or emergency service experience
- Fluency in a second language (including sign language)

- Successful candidates will need to provide proof of address, immunization, driver’s abstract, police background check with Vulnerable Sector screening, and successful medical screening
- Recruit candidates will be contacted upon verification of required documents
Probationary Period:
- One-year probationary period with in-house recruit training and required certifications
- Experienced municipal firefighters may be considered for a condensed program
Training and Advancement:
- Annual assessment of knowledge, training, participation, and certification for promotion eligibility
- Opportunity to pursue additional training/certification for company officer roles after achieving First-Class Firefighter
Pay and Benefits:
- Hourly pay for training, emergency responses, scheduled public events, and approved duties
- Progression through pay classifications from Recruit Firefighter (60% of First-Class rate) to First-Class Firefighter (100%) over four years
- Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage for injuries/lost time
- Life and AD&D insurance; VFIS coverage included, additional insurance available
- Provided with pager, charger, full protective equipment, station wear, and dress uniform (after probation)
