Description
The City of Cambridge is seeking a Mechanic Firefighter (Probationary) to join the Mechanical Division of the Cambridge Fire Department. The successful candidate will report to the Division Chief Mechanical Officer and will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair of fire service vehicles and equipment. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and functionality of the apparatus used by the fire department, contributing to the overall mission of serving the community effectively.
The Mechanic Firefighter will engage in hands-on work, including diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance of various mechanical systems, while adhering to safety standards and regulations. Duties and Responsibilities

- Dismantles, inspects, diagnoses, cleans, repairs, overhauls, replaces, installs, maintains, assembles, lubricates, and/or adjusts diesel, gasoline, powered equipment.
- Utilizes diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot and maintain onboard computer-controlled systems.
- Performs fire apparatus system preventative maintenance tasks.
- Works with other mechanics to facilitate repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Carries out preventive maintenance inspections and performs periodic mandatory commercial vehicle inspections (PMCVI's).
- Designs, fabricates, and fits parts and assemblies.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs SCBA and other personal safety equipment.
- Maintains compliance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and NFPA codes.
- Responds to after-hour callouts on a rotational basis.
- Occasionally operates fire service vehicles and performs Fire Pump/Tanker Driver/Operator duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Certified Journeyperson 310T Truck and Coach Certificate of Qualification.
- Certified Journeyperson 310S Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualification or willingness to attain it.
- Master Level Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification or willingness to attain it.
- Possess NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II including Hazardous Materials Operations.
- Valid Ontario Class 'D' Driver's License with 'Z' air brake endorsement.
- Current First Responder Certificate or higher with BLS level CPR.
- Fluent in English; able to communicate clearly under pressure.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Ability to maintain vehicle and maintenance records in a computerized environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous Fire Department and/or Emergency Vehicle experience.
- Demonstrated interest in continuing education through ongoing learning.

- Annual salary range of $65,797 to $119,632 (2026 Rates).
- 40-hour work week, including shifts, weekends, and holidays.
