An Eligibility List may be established from this competition – the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 18 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term or casual vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going to the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

This position is part of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).

Duties and Responsibilities

The position's primary responsibilities include responding to fires, rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents and other incidents where risks are posed to life and property as well as participating in fire prevention activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Responds to residential/industrial/structural/wildland fire emergencies and rescues.
  2. Assess the emergency scene for hazards and determine if additional resources are required.
  3. Follow communication protocols including exchanging information with other crew members, dispatchers and commanding officers.
  4. Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational/training workshops, participating in scheduled drills and assisting with the volunteer training as required.
  5. Follow, as far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standard operating procedures.
  6. Ensure operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements. Preform custodial and light maintenance services to fire halls and surrounding grounds, including snow and ice removal.
  7. Maintain accurate records and provide input into response procedures and protocols.
  8. Conduct fire safety inspections and assist with pre-emergency planning.
  9. Present public education programs including fire hall tours, fire safety house program and safety workshops.
  10. Act as Captain, as assigned.
  11. Act as Incident Command during simultaneous emergencies when assigned.
  12. Other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent and 6 months on-the-job training
  • Firefighter certification NFPA Levels I and II or equivalent
  • Successfully meet the department's technical, physical and medical requirements
  • Rookie Firefighter: 0 - 6 months experience
    • Within 6 months completion of Job Performance Reports
  • 4th Class Firefighter: 6 - 12 months municipal firefighting experience
  • 3rd Class Firefighter: 1 - 2 years municipal firefighting experience
  • 2nd Class Firefighter: 2 - 3 years municipal firefighting experience
    • Incident Safety Officer Certification
    • Emergency Scene Management Certificate
  • 1st Class Firefighter: 3 - 4 years municipal firefighting experience
    • Officer Level I Certificate
  • Class 3 Driver's License & Air Brake Endorsement
  • Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to following orders
  • Ability to work day or night under stressful situations
  • Work effectively independently or in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Standard First Aid/CPR Level C and Oxygen Therapy
  • Defensive Driving & Hazard Avoidance
  • Technical Rescue Course
  • Wildland Firefighting Basics
  • HAZMAT
  • Aerial Ladder Operations
