Description

The City of Brampton is seeking dedicated individuals for the role of Firefighter – Probationary within its Community Services department. As a member of Brampton Fire and Emergency Services, you will play a key part in building a safe community through emergency response and public fire safety education.

This full-time, permanent position offers the chance to serve and protect the citizens of Brampton, work in a fast-paced environment, and be part of a team focused on exceptional service and ongoing professional development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergencies, performing fire and rescue operations and providing medical assistance in emergency environments.
  • Community Engagement: Serve as a valued and respected member and ambassador at charity and community events.
  • Public Education: Provide public fire safety education and promote fire prevention awareness.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance of firefighting equipment and department property.
  • Professional Development: Participate in continuous learning and training to advance knowledge and skills.
  • Teamwork: Work collaboratively within a team and contribute to a culture that values personal and professional growth.
  • Other Duties: Perform other similar and related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Age: At least 18 years old
  • Legal Status: Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Education: Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent
  • Certification: NFPA 1001 - Fire Fighter I & II Certified (from an accredited institution or Fire Department, with Pro Board Seal or IFSAC)
  • Testing: Successful completion of the Ontario Fire Administration-Candidate Testing Program (OFAI) Stage 1 and 2
    Completion of the Ontario Firefighter Fitness Testing and/or York University Firefighter Fitness Assessment may be considered comparable
  • First Aid: Valid and current First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Driver’s License: Valid and unrestricted Ontario class “D” driver’s license with “Z” air brake endorsement
  • Driver’s Abstract: Required at conditional offer stage, dated within 30 days
  • Police Record Check: Satisfactory check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Language: Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English, both oral and written, under stressful conditions
  • Certifications: Ability to attain required certifications within 18 months from date of conditional offer of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Post-secondary education
  • Additional Certification: NFPA Operations or Technician level certificates in relevant programs
  • Trade Background: Trade apprenticeship or certification
  • Physical Skills: Completion of OFAI Swim Test (current and valid certificate)
  • Testing: Successful completion of OFAI Candidate Testing Program Stage 3
  • Language Skills: Multi-lingual skills (ability to communicate in other languages)
  • Community Knowledge: Knowledge of Brampton and its community
  • Other Experience: Other emergency service experience

Additional Information

Salary: Starting at $71,568.60 per annum, with incremental increases over a four-year classification process. Classification salary range: $71,568.60 - $119,281.00 per annum.

Hours of Work: 24-hour shifts (0700 hrs to 0700 hrs the following day), rotating over a 28-day period, averaging 42 hours per week.

Various tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the selection criteria. A criminal record search will be required for successful candidates. Vulnerable sector checks must be produced in the city of primary residence and be dated within six months of an offer.
