
Description
The City of Red Deer is seeking permanent full-time Firefighter Paramedics to join their emergency response team. This role involves working in a multidisciplinary team environment, responding to fire suppression, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents, as well as providing non-emergency services to the community.
This is a progressively responsible position suited for registered professional emergency responders. The City is looking for candidates who are Advanced Care Paramedics or second-year ACP students, with strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Response:
- Respond to fire suppression, medical, rescue, and hazardous material incidents.
- Perform emergency medical care as required.
- Participate in technical rescues and hazardous materials operations.
Community Services:
- Provide non-emergency services to the community as assigned.
Teamwork & Professionalism:
- Work collaboratively in a team environment with other emergency responders.
- Maintain strong interpersonal relationships with coworkers and the public.
Operational Readiness:
- Perform work-related duties while wearing a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
- Carry out tasks from heights in various situations.
- Effectively use all personal protective devices and clothing supplied by the Department.
Administrative & Technical:
- Demonstrate proficient use of computers and software programs (including Microsoft Office).
- Complete all required reports, documentation, and records accurately.
Minimum Qualifications
Certification & Registration:
- Registered professional status at the Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) designation in the Province of Alberta.
Licensing:
- Valid Alberta Driver's License with less than 5 demerits and no suspensions in the last 2 years. (Class 4 with Q endorsement)
Physical & Technical Requirements:
- Ability to perform duties while wearing a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
- Ability to work from heights as required.
- Effective use of all personal protective devices and clothing.
Screening:
- Must pass a criminal record check.
Team Skills:
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Testing:
- Proof of successful completion of a physical examination within the past 6 months and aptitude test as per requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Licenses & Certifications:
- Possession of a valid Alberta Driver's License (Class 1 or 3 and 4).
- Certificates or diplomas in emergency services-related fields.
- Progression towards or completion of certification in directly related areas of service delivery (e.g., NFPA 1001 Level II).
- Progress towards completion of certifications such as NFPA 1002, NFPA 1072 (HAZMAT Operations), and NFPA 1006 (Technical Rescuer Operations).
Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year on-duty experience in emergency services, emphasizing emergency response intervention programs (fire suppression, rescue, EMS, volunteer experience, community involvement).

Affiliation: The International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 1190
Remuneration: $44.09 to $50.11 per hour
Hours of Work: Full-time employees average 42 hours per week with a rotating schedule of 10, 12, and 14-hour shifts. Initial training period involves a Monday – Friday schedule for 2 weeks.
Eligibility: Registered Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP) and second-year ACP students are welcome to apply.
Aptitude Testing: Required for candidates; includes problem-solving, arithmetic, geometry, mechanical ability, and spelling. Testing lasts approximately 2.5 hours and is offered on specific dates at headquarters. There is a minimum passing mark.
Interview Dates: October 16, 17, and 20, 2025.
Reimbursement: Candidates must pay for RDP or U of A testing, but will be reimbursed if selected as a successful candidate.
