Description

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is seeking dedicated and highly skilled professionals to join Regional Emergency Services (RES) as Firefighter Paramedics (Primary Care Paramedic or Advanced Care Paramedic) or as Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedics. These permanent full-time positions serve the Fort McMurray, AB region and are represented by IAFF Local 2494.

These roles support a fully integrated Fire and EMS service in a diverse, dynamic, high-call volume environment providing advanced life support, emergency response, and specialized services (including helicopter medical and rescue services). Firefighter Paramedics perform dual roles in fire suppression and EMS, while Non-Fire Trained ACPs focus exclusively on advanced pre-hospital medical care.

RES operates in a complex and demanding environment where professionalism, adaptability, teamwork, and ongoing training are critical. Duties and Responsibilities

Emergency Response & Patient Care:

  • Respond safely and effectively to emergency and non-emergency incidents in accordance with RES policies, procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care and emergency medical services.
  • Follow direction from operations officers during emergency response, and from officers responsible for training, prevention, and operational readiness.

Shift Operations & Readiness:

  • Participate in daily shift operations, including apparatus and equipment checks, station duties, documentation and operational readiness activities.
  • Attend and successfully complete training required to maintain certifications and to progress to First Class Firefighter.
  • Complete administrative and reporting duties accurately and in a timely manner.

Teamwork & Community Support:

  • Work collaboratively within a team-based environment where trust, accountability, and communication are essential.
  • Support public education initiatives, fire prevention programs, and community engagement activities.
  • Contribute to the continuity, effectiveness, and professionalism of the Regional Emergency Services Department.
  • Uphold and support the Corporate Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Certifications:

  • NFPA 1001 Level I and II is required for Firefighter PCP/ACP positions.
  • Current Alberta College of Paramedics Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Certification is required.
  • Valid CPR - Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Licences & Screening:

  • Valid Class Four (4) Alberta Driver's Licence with Q Endorsement is required.
  • Clear Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain sound judgment, focus, and performance in high-stress, unpredictable emergency situations over extended periods.
  • Capacity to work effectively in extreme environmental conditions, including hot, cold, confined, or physically restrictive spaces.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Proficiency with computers and electronic systems, including electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) platforms, incident reporting, and other operational software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Class Three (3) Alberta Driver's Licence with Q Endorsement is preferred.

Recruitment Process & Candidate Expectations:

  • Candidates invited to continue must successfully complete each stage of the process to advance, including:
  1. Aptitude Testing (completed in Fort McMurray or remotely through approved invigilation services)
  2. Firefighter Physical Fitness Testing (or Paramedic Physical Fitness Testing for ACP positions)
  3. Interview
  4. Medical Assessment
  • Due to the physical demands of this role, applicants are strongly encouraged to begin preparing early for the required fitness test.
  • The RMWB will accept firefighter fitness test results completed within the past six (6) months from the University of Alberta, Keyano College, or Red Deer Polytechnic.
  • Applicants must be prepared to travel to Fort McMurray, as portions of the recruitment process are conducted in person.
