Brandon Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) is seeking candidates for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. As a member of the emergency services team, the Firefighter/Paramedic will deliver firefighting, emergency medical services, rescue, and non-emergency services in Brandon and the surrounding area. The department emphasizes ongoing technical skill development and provides training opportunities coordinated by Training Officers to ensure high performance levels and assist with career development. The position operates within a team environment, working collaboratively with other employees and under the direction of the Captain or designate.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responds to fire alarms to combat, control, and extinguish fires and to perform the necessary duties related to firefighting such as ventilation, search and rescue, overhaul, and salvage
- Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance and performs emergency medical duties at the PCP level as per Manitoba Health Guidelines and Protocols and/or Department standards
- Receives incoming emergency and business calls and assists in the logging of information and dispatching of appropriate personnel and equipment as per General Operating Guidelines or as directed
- Attends all In-House training sessions to maintain a level of competence and certification satisfactory to meet all Fire Department standards and participates in external training sessions as directed and required
- Maintains records and prepares forms and reports required through the delivery of the emergency services
- Cleans, operates, and maintains fire, rescue, and ambulance vehicles, equipment, personal protective gear, and all other related apparatus to Department standards
- Performs housekeeping and routine maintenance tasks of emergency services facilities and grounds as required or assigned
- Performs public fire education and fire prevention duties as directed
- Performs all other duties as assigned or required
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized public fire protection program or volunteer firefighter/paramedic who has completed all necessary courses in the Public Fire Protection Program or the Public Fire Paramedic Program
- Completion of the majority of training in fire suppression and rescue
- Ability and willingness to undertake further technical skill upgrades throughout their career
- Capability to work in all types of weather conditions
- Ability to work in areas of confined space, heights, unpleasant noise levels, hazardous environments, and adverse odours
- Availability to work varying shifts, overtime, and call outs
- Self-motivated and quality-driven to perform independent projects and facilitate team goals
- Ability to work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees

Physical testing will be offered by BFES at no cost to the candidate. Equivalent physical tests may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Rate of Pay: $34.86 - $50.84 – July 1, 2024 rates
