Description
The City of Toronto is seeking dedicated individuals for the position of Firefighter Operation within the Emergency, Fire and Paramedics Services division. This full-time, permanent role involves responding to a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations, providing essential firefighting, medical, and rescue services to the community. The position requires high professionalism and the ability to work effectively within a team of first responders. Candidates must be prepared for the demanding nature of firefighting duties and the commitment to public safety in Canada’s largest city.
Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Duties:
- Immediately responds to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency and non-emergency related calls.
- Performs firefighting, forcible entry, search and rescue, and emergency medical treatment.
- Drives and operates fire apparatus and equipment following established protocols.
- Conducts inspections to ensure compliance with fire/life safety guidelines.
- Maintains equipment and prepares it for future readiness after emergency responses.
- Collaborates effectively with other first responders.
Non–emergency Duties:
- Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus daily.
- Performs routine maintenance and safety checks on vehicles.
- Educates the public about fire prevention and safety practices.
- Participates in fire safety inspections and pre-incident fire planning.
General Responsibilities:
- Maintains professionalism and follows the chain of command.
- Stays psychologically and physically prepared for emergencies.
- Works effectively in diverse environments and under stressful conditions.
- Complies with safety protocols and uniform standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence class D or higher with a Z endorsement.
- Completion of OFAI Candidate Testing Services (CTS) stages as required.
- Completion of NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2 from an accredited institution.
- Possession of valid Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
- Ability to work on a 24-hour shift schedule.
- Provide a Vulnerable Sector Check from a Police Service in Ontario.
- Must possess water survival skills.
- Ability to work and positively interact within a diverse work environment.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Commitment to volunteerism and community involvement.
- Advanced experience in emergency medical response.
- Training and experience operating heavy vehicles.
- Military and/or health care experience.
- Demonstrated experience dealing with diverse communities.
- Multilingual skills preferred.
Additional Information
Salary: $36.81 per hour (2026 Rate)
Shift Information: 42 hours per week
