Description

Toronto Fire Services is seeking passionate individuals to join their team as Firefighter Operators. This full-time, permanent position plays a crucial role in emergency response, serving the diverse communities of Canada's largest city. As a Firefighter, you will respond to a wide variety of emergencies, uphold high professional standards, and contribute to the safety and well-being of Toronto's residents.

Successful candidates will be integral members of the Operations Command, working collaboratively with other first responders and the public. The role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while developing your skills in a dynamic and challenging environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Emergency Duties:

  • Respond immediately and effectively to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Perform assigned emergency scene duties such as firefighting, forcible entry, search and rescue, hose carrying, ladder climbing, hydrant operations, breaking through walls and ceilings, and protecting individuals endangered by fire.
  • Conduct overhaul, technical rescues, provide emergency medical treatment and CPR, support hazardous materials scenes, and conserve property and the environment.
  • Secure emergency scenes for the safety of the public and other firefighters.
  • Drive and operate apparatus and vehicles in accordance with policy and the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
  • Operate equipment such as pumps, hoses, manual and mechanical ladders, generators, and automobile extrication equipment.
  • Inspect emergency scenes for compliance with fire/life safety guidelines before leaving.
  • Clean, inspect, and account for all equipment post-incident, ensuring readiness for future emergencies.
  • Work effectively as part of a crew and alongside other first responders such as police and paramedics.

Non-Emergency Duties:

  • Clean, inspect, and maintain equipment and apparatus daily.
  • Conduct maintenance and safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in fire station quarters and grounds.
  • Complete all required training and retraining within prescribed timelines.
  • Participate in preplanning to familiarize with the response area, new buildings, and streets under construction.
  • Educate the public about fire prevention and safety practices.
  • Participate in Pre-Incident Fire Planning and conduct fire safety inspections.

General Responsibilities:

  • Understand and follow the Chain of Command at all times.
  • Comply with uniform SOGs and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Be psychologically and physically prepared to respond to any emergency.
  • Work at heights or in confined spaces as required.
  • Wear supplied safety equipment and uniforms.
  • Accept and respect differences, and live/work cooperatively with others in close quarters.
  • Perform all duties safely and effectively in accordance with City and Fire Services policies.
  • Follow the direction of senior officers.
  • Maintain professionalism, integrity, reliability, and credibility at all times.
  • Support the City of Toronto and Toronto Fire Services vision and mission statements.
  • Contribute to emergency response and preparedness as part of the Fire Service team.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Age: 18 years or older
  • Work Authorization: Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Driver’s Licence: Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence class D or higher (A, B, or C) with Z endorsement
  • OFAI Candidate Testing Services: Successful completion of all required Stages, including:
    • Stage One Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (expired certificates accepted)
    • Stage Two Hearing Assessment (current and valid at posting closing date)
    • Stage Two Vision Assessment (current and valid at posting closing date)
    • Stage Two Encapsulated Treadmill Test (current and valid at posting closing date)
    • Stage Three Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job-Related Tests (FPAT) (current and valid at posting closing date)
  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2: Successful completion prior to application, obtained from a recognized and accredited post-secondary institution with IFSAC or ProBoard seal
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR): Valid certification (e.g., Canadian Red Cross), valid for 3 years; AEMCA certification also accepted
  • Shift Work: Ability to work a 24-hour shift schedule averaging 42 hours per week, including weekends and holidays
  • Vulnerable Sector Check: Ability to provide satisfactory check from an Ontario Police Service
  • Physical and Psychological Fitness: Fit and able to perform sustained, intense work
  • Water Survival: Ability to pass Lifesaving Society’s Canadian Swim to Survive Standard during Operation Recruit Program
  • Willingness and Ability: To work in adverse and dangerous situations, including extreme weather
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Required
  • Familiarity with OHSA: Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations
  • Stress Management: Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions
  • Communication Skills: Oral and written communication proficiency
  • Problem Solving/Analytical Skills: Required
  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective interaction with public, Fire Services staff, and City personnel
  • Task Prioritization: Ability to prioritize tasks and demands
  • Teamwork: Ability to work within a team environment
  • Independence: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Diversity: Ability to work and positively interact in a diverse environment
  • Community Service: Involvement required
  • Customer Service: Skills required

Preferred Qualifications

Assets:

  • Commitment to volunteerism and community involvement (volunteering in social/civil/community events, non-profit organizations, counseling, crisis intervention)
  • Personal and professional development through specialized or advanced training and ongoing learning
  • Advanced experience in emergency medical response (e.g., Paramedics, Nursing, Ski Patrol, Lifeguard)
  • Completion of OFAI Swim Test, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Scuba Diving Certification, etc.
  • Training and experience operating heavy vehicles (trucks, tractor trailers, buses)
  • Military and/or health care experience
  • Experience dealing with diverse communities
  • Commitment to a healthy lifestyle
  • Multilingual skills preferred

Additional Information

Salary: $34.09 per hour (2024 rate)

Work Hours: 42 hours per week, 24-hour shift schedule including weekends and holidays
