Description

The City of Toronto is seeking candidates for the position of Firefighter Operation within the Fire Services, Fire Svcs Operations Command division. This is a full-time, permanent position with over 20 openings. Firefighters play a key role in responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, protecting the public, and supporting the City's vision and mission statements. The successful candidates will be part of a professional, diverse, and dedicated team serving Canada's largest and most diverse city. The role involves working closely with other first responders and being an integral member of the emergency response team.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Immediately respond in a timely fashion to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency and non-emergency related calls as required
- Perform all emergency scene duties assigned, such as firefighting, forcible entry, search and rescue, carrying hoses, climbing ladders, hooking hoses up to hydrants, breaking through walls and ceilings, protecting those in danger due to a fire, overhaul, technical rescues, emergency medical treatment and CPR, hazardous materials scene support, property conservation, environmental conservation, and securing the emergency scene for safety
- Drive and operate any apparatus/vehicles in accordance with policy and the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
- Operate all equipment utilized by Toronto Fire Services, including pumps, hoses, manual ladders, mechanical ladders, generators, automobile extrication equipment, etc.
- Conduct inspections and help ensure an emergency scene is in compliance with fire/life safety guidelines before leaving the scene
- After returning from the emergency scene, clean, inspect, and account for all equipment used and return all equipment to a state of readiness
- Work effectively as a team player with fellow crew members and other first responders, maintaining a high standard of professionalism
- Clean, inspect, and maintain equipment and apparatus daily
- Conduct full maintenance and safety checks of vehicles and equipment
- Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks to equipment and apparatus
- Keep fire station, equipment, quarters, and grounds clean and orderly daily
- Complete all required training and retraining as assigned within prescribed time periods
- Participate in preplanning to familiarize with immediate response area, new or unusual buildings in the station's district, and streets and roads under construction
- Educate the public about fire prevention and fire safety practices
- Participate in Pre-Incident Fire Planning
- Conduct fire safety inspections
- Understand and follow the Chain of Command at all times
- Comply with uniform SOGs, being well-groomed, professional, and presentable to the public
- Be psychologically and physically prepared to respond to emergencies of any kind at all times
- Be able to work at heights or in confined spaces as required
- Wear supplied safety equipment and uniforms
- Accept and respect others' differences and be able to live and work with other firefighters in close quarters throughout shifts, depending on and trusting each other to perform duties successfully
- Perform all work duties and activities in a safe and effective manner following City of Toronto and Toronto Fire Services policies and procedures
- Follow the direction of a senior officer
- Continually maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity, reliability, and credibility
- Function as an integral member of the City of Toronto workforce to support corporate vision and mission statements
- Function as an integral member of the Toronto Fire Service workforce to deliver and support Division-specific vision and mission statements
- Function as an integral member of the Toronto Fire Service emergency response team to deliver and support Division-specific goals of emergency response and preparedness

Minimum Qualifications

- 18 years of age or older
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must possess valid Ontario Driver’s Licence class D or higher (A, B or C) with a Z endorsement
- Successful completion of the OFAI Candidate Testing Services Stages as listed below (as verified by possession of a CTS Certificate):
- CTS Certificate for Stage One Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (expired valid certificates accepted)
- CTS Certificate for Stage Two Hearing Assessment (must be current and valid at time of posting closing date: July 24, 2025)
- CTS Certificate for Stage Two Vision Assessment (must be current and valid at time of posting closing date: July 24, 2025)
- CTS Certificate for Stage Two Encapsulated Treadmill Test (must be current and valid at time of posting closing date: July 24, 2025)
- CTS Certificate for Stage Three Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job–Related Tests (FPAT) (must be current and valid at time of posting closing date: July 24, 2025)
- Successful completion of NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2 prior to the date of application submission. Training must be secured from a post-secondary institution in Ontario with either IFSAC or ProBoard seal, accredited by the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), or any institution outside Ontario officially accredited by IFSAC or ProBoard
- Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification (e.g. from the Canadian Red Cross), valid for 3 years. Candidates holding an Advanced Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA) certification will also be considered
- Must work on a 24-hour shift schedule, including weekends and holidays, with an assigned shift averaging 42 hours per week over a four-week period
- Must provide a Criminal Record Check obtained from a Police Service in Ontario to the satisfaction of Toronto Fire Services
- Must be fit and able to handle the sustained, intense physical and psychological effort required to perform duties of the position
- Must possess water survival skills at minimum; must pass the Lifesaving Society’s Canadian Swim to Survive Standard during the Toronto Fire Services’ Operation Recruit Program
- Willingness and ability to work in extremely adverse and dangerous situations, including extreme weather events
- Mechanical aptitude
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations
- Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions
- Oral and written communication skills
- Problem solving and analytical skills
- Interpersonal and interaction skills when dealing with the public, Toronto Fire Services staff, and all other levels of City of Toronto personnel

Preferred Qualifications

- Commitment to volunteerism and community involvement as demonstrated by experience volunteering in social, civil, or community events and initiatives, non-profit organizations, counselling, crisis intervention
- Commitment to personal and professional development through specialized or advanced training and ongoing learning
- Advanced experience in emergency medical response (e.g. Paramedics, Nursing, Ski Patrol, Lifeguard, etc.)
- Completion of OFAI Swim Test, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Scuba Diving Certification, etc.
- Training and experience operating heavy vehicles (for example: trucks, tractor trailers, buses)
- Military and/or health care experience
- Demonstrated experience dealing with diverse communities
- Demonstrated commitment to a healthy lifestyle
- Multilingual skills preferred
