Description

Six Nations of the Grand River is seeking a dedicated individual for the full-time Firefighter position within the Fire & Emergency Services Department. Reporting directly to an assigned Captain, the Firefighter will be responsible for carrying out a range of emergency response and safety-related duties.

This role involves responding to fires, rescue operations, hazardous materials incidents, and medical emergencies to protect life and property. The Firefighter will also assist in fire prevention, public education, equipment maintenance, and other duties as assigned by the department leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Duties:

  • Perform and train for fire ground operations within an Incident Management System to protect lives and minimize property loss and environmental damage.
  • Conduct and train in rescue operations to safely remove victims from danger.
  • Respond to hazardous materials and CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) incidents within the level of training and available equipment.
  • Provide capable emergency medical patient care, including assessment, stabilization, and assisting with patient transfer to emergency medical services.
  • Adhere to and promote firefighter safety practices and training according to legislation and department standards.
  • Operate and maintain fire apparatus (pumpers, aerial devices, tankers, rescue trucks, support vehicles) safely and effectively.
  • Maintain fire equipment for operational readiness, safety, and longevity.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist in developing pre-incident plans for effective emergency response.
  • Perform administrative tasks to ensure efficient departmental operations in line with regulations and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate ongoing commitment to personal and professional development, keeping current with tactics, standards, safety, and procedures.
  • Maintain departmental fire safety standards and professional competency.

Communications & Liaison:

  • Participate in fire safety inspections and refer safety infractions/violations as required.
  • Engage in public education and relations to promote fire and life safety awareness within the community.
  • Perform communication duties to ensure timely and accurate information transfer within the department and with external agencies.

Other Related Duties:

  • Perform work as required by the assigned Captain and as directed by other department leadership.
  • Represent the department professionally with the public, media, and external agencies.

Working Conditions:

  • Extensive physical activity, mental stress, and hazardous conditions.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in inclement weather; required to work unscheduled hours, weekends, and statutory holidays.
  • Must be able to take direction, work independently, and prioritize tasks under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Age: 18 years of age or older.
  • Legal Status: Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Education: High school graduate diploma (OSSD) or academic equivalent.
  • Firefighter Certification: NFPA 1001 Level I & II (Pro Board and/or IFSAC Accredited).
  • HAZMAT Certification: NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations (Pro Board and/or IFSAC Accredited).
  • First Aid: Standard First Aid, CPR Level C with AED (Canadian Red Cross).
  • Medical Training: Willingness to obtain Canadian Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder or higher within 9 months of job offer.
  • Physical Fitness: Successful completion of the SNFES Physical Aptitude Assessment within designated time.
  • Driver’s License: Minimum Ontario Driver’s License with D-Z Endorsement.
  • Abstract/Record Check: Satisfactory Drivers Abstract and Vulnerable Police Record Check.
  • Physical & Mental Fitness: Must be fit and able to handle sustained, intense physical and psychological effort required for firefighting duties.
  • Communication: Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English under stress.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a team-oriented environment.
  • Work Conditions: Willingness and ability to work in extremely adverse and dangerous situations.
  • Competency: Successful completion of skills and tasks outlined within the Firefighter Class System guidelines.
  • Shifts: Willing and able to work within a 12- or 24-hour rotational shift schedule, including weekends and statutory holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of Six Nations Fire & Emergency Services Department policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • History of volunteerism and community participation.
  • Experience in team-oriented activities, sports, or organizations.
  • Experience in emergency services (firefighting, Wildland fire, Forest services, Police, Coast Guard, Paramedic, Military, Nursing, Search and Rescue).
  • Knowledge of different cultures.
  • Coaching, teaching, or instructional experience.
  • Demonstrated athletic or physical capabilities and achievements.
  • Computer skills and experience with relevant software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Advanced emergency medical, technical rescue, or hazardous materials training.
  • Any technical trade certificate/license beneficial to firefighting (e.g., electrician, carpenter, plumber, building inspector, mechanic, electronic/electrical technician).
  • Experience operating heavy equipment or large vehicles.
  • Experience using technology applicable to firefighting, including communication tools such as mobile radios.
  • Post-secondary education in an applicable or related field.
  • Multilingual abilities, including sign language.

  • Type: Full-Time
  • Hours of Work: 84 hours biweekly; rotational 12- or 24-hour shifts, including weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Wage Range: Minimum $27.20 per hour (competitive compensation package offered, commensurate with qualifications).
