Mississauga Fire and Emergency Service (MFES) is seeking passionate and skilled individuals for the role of Firefighter. MFES is a dedicated team providing a wide range of emergency and non-emergency services to the residents, businesses, and visitors of the City of Mississauga. As a firefighter, you will join a dynamic team, engage in continuous learning, and play a crucial role in protecting life, property, and the environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Response:
- Provide exceptional customer service as a respected member of the community.
- Respond to all emergencies including medical calls (patient care, medical aid, CPR, defibrillation), firefighting (deploy hoses, use equipment, operate vehicles), and various rescue operations (search and rescue, hazardous materials, water/ice rescue, rope rescue, elevator rescue, confined space, trench, machine rescue).
Maintenance and Prevention:
- Perform apparatus and station maintenance.
- Assess buildings for fire and life safety compliance, conduct pre-plans, tactical site assessments, and fire prevention activities.
Public Education and Community Engagement:
- Participate in the delivery of public education programs and attend events to promote fire safety awareness.
- Assist in a variety of non-emergency situations as needed.
Training and Compliance:
- Engage in continuous training and learning to advance knowledge and skills.
- Work in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and City of Mississauga policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age at time of application.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent (international credentials require recognized evaluation report).
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II and NFPA 1072 (NFPA 472) Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certifications or equivalent (Pro Board or IFSAC proof required).
- Valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification (CPR BLS/HCP or higher accepted).
- Valid and unrestricted Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with “Z” endorsement or equivalent, and acceptable driving record.
- Provide a Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Screening acceptable to the City.
- Successful completion of interviews, medical and practical assessments, behavioural assessments, York University Firefighter fitness assessment, swim assessment, reference and background checks. Some assessments may be at the candidate’s expense.
- Effective English communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Excellent hearing without hearing aids.
- Ability to swim proficiently (must pass swim assessment).
- Meet vision requirements of NFPA 1582 (visual acuity, colour vision, binocular vision, peripheral vision, ocular health).
- Ability to handle intense and sustained physical effort.
- Willingness to work 24-hour shifts on a rotating basis (including weekends and holidays).

Preferred Qualifications
- College diploma or university degree in any discipline from an accredited institution.
- Volunteer, humanitarian, or community involvement experience of at least one year.
- Trade apprenticeship certification or a minimum of one year of experience in skilled trades recognized in Ontario.
- Minimum one year of previous experience as a volunteer, part-time, or full-time firefighter.
- Minimum one year of experience in emergency services other than fire suppression.
- Minimum one year of experience operating large/heavy vehicles or heavy machinery.
- Minimum one year of experience as an elevator technician, fire alarm technician, fire life safety technician, military, or coast guard.
- Possess National Lifeguard Services (NLS) certification.
- Fluent in a second language other than English and French.
- Occupational Health and Safety training and certification (e.g., JHSC part 1 and 2).
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
- Experience in customer service and/or public service roles.
- Experience competing at provincial, national, or professional athletic levels.
- Previous experience, training, and certification in technical rescue (water, ice, trench, rope, confined space rescue covered under NFPA 1006).
- HAZMAT removal or private disaster management experience (chemical spills, environmental clean-up, mold, asbestos, biohazard, contamination clean up).
Additional Information
Compensation:
- Hourly Rate/Salary: $68,690 - $114,483
Hours of Work:
- 42 hours per week, 24-hour shifts
Work Location:
- The Garry W Morden Centre
