Description

A firefighter performs work under the direction of a Suppression Captain or and/or Suppression Lieutenant in
charge of the assigned shift or company. The position entails firefighting, rescue, medical aid, hazardous
materials, fire prevention, public education, general maintenance of all fire and rescue equipment and facilities
and responding to fire department incidents. Additionally the firefighter participates in all related training
activities on a continuous basis.

Modeling positive public and inter-agency relations is necessary to serve the public's best interests and maintain
a desirable image of the Fire Department and the City of Fort St John.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following exemplify the type and level of accountability held by this position.
• Responds to all non-emergency and emergency incidents and performs firefighting, rescue, medical aid
and hazardous materials mitigation activities as part of a team.
• Assists in the cleaning and general maintenance of apparatus, equipment, station and grounds.
• Participates in all related training activities.
• Participates in pre-fire plan, company inspections, fire prevention and public education activities.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
• NFPA 1001 Firefighter II (Pro-board or IFSAC Accreditation)
• NFPA 472 Hazardous Material Operations Level (Pro-board or IFSAC Accreditation)
• BC EMA First Responder License or BC EMR or BC PCP or equivalent
• Valid BC Class 3 Driver's License with Air Endorsement or equivalent
• Ability to successfully pass a criminal record check

Preferred Qualifications

• Work experience related to the job duties of a firefighter. (Examples include: building
construction, mechanical experience, driving large or emergency vehicles, wild land firefighting,
first aid, nursing, paramedical experience, teaching or instructional experience).
• NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Technician (Pro-board or IFSAC Accreditation).
• NFPA 1002 Fire Department Vehicle Driver/Operator or equivalent training for Fire Apparatus
Driver/Operator.
• NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue or equivalent training to Operations Level in Vehicle & Machinery
Rescue, Confined Space and Rope Rescue.
• ICS 100 Incident Command System 100.
• SPP-WFF 1 Wildland Fire Fighter Level 1.
• SPP-115 Structure Protection.
• CARs 323 Aircraft Firefighting at Airports and Aerodromes (Canadian Aviation Regulations)
• Successful completion of a post-secondary education program (academic, technical or trades).
• Volunteer experience in the emergency services field (firefighting, coast guard, search and
rescue).
• Demonstrated community involvement.
• Demonstrated commitment to a lifestyle of fitness.

Additional Information

• Working knowledge of the operation, general maintenance of all apparatus and equipment, and
methods used in combating, extinguishing, preventing fires, rescue work and hazardous material
mitigation work.
• Working knowledge of emergency medical care.
• Working knowledge of Department emergency and non-emergency operations, training and prevention
programs.
• Working knowledge of fire department rules, regulations, standing orders, policies and applicable
municipal and provincial codes, acts and bylaws.
• Working knowledge of equipment maintenance, building construction, electrical and gas safety,
hydraulics and the geography of the City of Fort St John, Fire Protection Area and Rescue Response Area.
• Working knowledge of computers.

• Considerable mechanical aptitude.
• Demonstrated ability to react quickly and remain calm under duress and strain.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction.
• Ability and strength to safely do prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
• Ability to safely operate firefighting and rescue apparatus and equipment.
• Ability to promote and maintain a productive and engaging workplace that values diversity, encourages
innovation and achieves results.
• Far visual acuity as per NFPA 1582.
• Peripheral vision as per NFPA 1582.
• Normal unaided hearing as per NFPA 1582.
