Description

The Town of Yarmouth Fire Department is creating a pool of qualified applicants for upcoming Firefighter/Engineer opportunities. Applicants who have applied since July 2025 will be automatically included in this pool, which will be reviewed in late January 2026.

The Yarmouth Fire Department, with a history dating back to 1837, is dedicated to fire prevention and the protection of Yarmouth's citizens. The Firefighter/Engineer position is an operational role involving driving fire apparatus, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical response, and equipment maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and Equipment: Maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire department property.
  • Following Orders: Carrying out specific orders and directions received from senior officers.
  • Emergency Response: Responds to emergencies, including but not limited to fires, rescues, public assistance, emergency medical, and hazardous material spills/leaks.
  • Apparatus Operation: Drives and operates firefighting and emergency equipment as assigned.
  • Fire Prevention & Public Education: Conduct fire prevention inspections and public education programs/activities as assigned.
  • Reporting: Completes and submits various reports and records as required.
  • Training: Attend on-duty training sessions and off-site training courses, as necessary.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintains equipment following organizational policies and procedures.
  • Safety: Responsible for workplace safety as outlined in the NS Occupational Health and Safety Act and organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Other Duties: Other duties as assigned, as appropriate to the function and responsibilities of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Age: 19 years of age or older
  • License: Nova Scotia Class 3 license (or equivalent from another province)
  • Education: High School Completion Certificate or equivalent
  • Background Checks: Must complete a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check (upon request)
  • Driver's Abstract: Provide a driver's abstract (upon request)
  • Legal Status: Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Communication: Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing (bilingual is an asset)
  • Location: Must live within or be willing to move within 40 minutes of the fire hall (under normal driving conditions)

Required Certifications (or equivalents as reviewed by the Fire Chief):

  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 Firefighter
  • Incident Command System (ICS) Level 100
  • Certificate pump course as per NFPA 1002 Standard on Fire Apparatus Driver Operator Professional Qualification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Firefighter experience
  • NFPA 1001 Level II Firefighter
  • Additional education
  • Trade apprenticeship or certification
  • NFPA 1521, Standard for Fire Department Safety Officer Incident Safety
  • Incident Command System (ICS) Level 200

Additional Information

Work Schedule: Required to work flexible hours and/or work on a 24-hour shift; availability to meet other department obligations outside the regular work schedule is required.

Physical/Environmental Demands: Physical work is required; must be capable of lifting, carrying, or performing any function needed at an emergency scene. Extended working periods without rest and sleep, and in extreme or hazardous conditions.

Compensation: Salary and benefits as per the collective agreement with Yarmouth Firefighters Association Local Union No. 2094.
