Description

The Town of Truro is accepting applications for a permanent, full-time Firefighter/Engineer position with the Truro Fire Service. This unionized role is governed by the Collective Agreement between the Town of Truro and IAFF Local 1627 and reports to the Platoon Captain/Truro Fire Chief.

Under the direction of the Fire Chief (or designate), the Firefighter/Engineer operates fire apparatus and performs firefighting, rescue, and related emergency and non-emergency services. The role requires rapid, efficient, and safe performance under hazardous emergency conditions, along with routine maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Emergency Response & Operations:

  • Respond to emergency calls; lay and connect hose to hydrant; operate apparatus and/or hold nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders; use extinguishers and other equipment; perform necessary firefighting and rescue activities under the supervision of the Fire Chief or designate.
  • Respond to non-emergency calls, as required.
  • Drive and operate department apparatus and equipment.
  • May be responsible for emergency operations until command is assumed by an officer.

Maintenance & Readiness:

  • Maintain all Fire Service apparatus, equipment and facilities, in conjunction with daily duties, contract agreement, and within the scope of personal qualification abilities.
  • Participate in drills and inspections.

Fire Prevention, Inspections & Public Education:

  • Conduct fire prevention inspections.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of public education and fire prevention programs to internal staff and the public.
  • Conduct pre-inspections and post inspections, as directed by the fire inspector and/or designate upon completion of in-house training.
  • Ensure that all identified risks to life and property in public buildings are remediated in accordance with recognized standards.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Complete reports and maintain vital incident information for investigative and record keeping purposes.

Training, Safety & Professional Conduct:

  • Participate in on-going training.
  • Responsible for workplace safety as outlined in the NS Occupational Health and Safety Act and organizational policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Work as a member of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Follow direction and operate within a chain of command.
  • Adhere to the regulations of the Fire Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Adhere to the National Fire Protection Association Publications.
  • Other duties as may be required, within the scope of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Certifications:

  • Completion of High School or equivalent.
  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 certified Fire Fighter or equivalent.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certifications.

Licensing & Eligibility:

  • Class 3 Nova Scotia Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada as a Fire Fighter.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able to perform the demanding tasks of this position; physical agility and fitness must be met and maintained.
  • Completion of a medical examination to report physical fitness.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of firefighting tactics and strategy.
  • Knowledge of emergency incident management.
  • Knowledge of firefighting occupational health and safety.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and codes (e.g., Municipal Government Act, Fire Safety Act & Regulation, National Fire Code of Canada, Nova Scotia Building Code, NFPA Codes and Standards, etc.).

Special Requirements (Pre-Employment/Employment Conditions):

  • Clear driving abstract prior to employment start date.
  • Provide a Criminal Record Check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse populations or knowledge of cultural safety practices is considered an asset.
  • Preference given to the certified Fire Fighter.

  • Ability to react quickly and remain calm under stressful situations.
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions and extremes of temperature for extended periods of time.
  • Physically demanding work including running, walking, crouching, climbing, crawling, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Rotating shift schedule including call back while off duty.
  • Work in office and classroom environments.
