Description

The City of Iqaluit, the vibrant and scenic capital of Nunavut, is seeking experienced and motivated individuals to join their Emergency Services team as Firefighter/Emergency Medical Responders (EMR). This full-time, permanent position is a key part of the city's efforts to provide safety and emergency support to its unique northern community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Emergency Response:

  • Respond to fire and rescue emergencies as dispatched by supervisors.
  • Provide pre-hospital emergency medical care as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).
  • Operate and maintain communications equipment for dispatch and response coordination.

Fire Prevention & Public Education:

  • Conduct fire prevention activities and fire inspections as assigned.
  • Participate in public education initiatives related to fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Equipment & Facility Maintenance:

  • Perform minor maintenance of emergency apparatus, small equipment, and station buildings and grounds.

Teamwork & Continuous Improvement:

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment, contributing to continuous improvement and learning.
  • Strive for excellence in customer service and uphold the department’s values.

Other Duties:

  • Carry a pager and respond to emergencies outside of normal shift schedule as required.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by Chief Officers or supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Certifications & Credentials:

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification
  • Current CPR Health Care Provider (HCP)
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II
  • NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with air brake endorsement
  • Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant status
  • Proof of Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Driver’s abstract with no more than six points within the last three years
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (within the last 6 months)
  • Ability to operate communications equipment

Preferred Qualifications

Assets and Additional Skills:

  • Post-secondary education completion
  • Apprenticeship or trade certification
  • Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) certification
  • NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver Operator
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Volunteer work in the community
  • Demonstrated experience as a firefighter
  • Knowledge of City of Iqaluit’s geography, streets, major buildings, and hazards
  • Skill in operating and maintaining heavy equipment and/or commercial vehicles
  • Skill in the use and operation of hand tools, power tools, and portable equipment
  • Ability to communicate in Inuktitut or French

Additional Information

Salary: $42.40 per hour, average 42 hours/week

Settlement Allowance: $20,907.43 annually

Work Schedule: 4 days on, 4 days off (two day and two night shifts). Overtime and emergency call response outside of normal shift schedule may be required.

Location: Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. No staff housing available.

Union Status: Unionized position
