Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) is seeking dedicated Firefighters to join their team in protecting the lives, property, and environment of Edmonton's citizens around the clock. This role is ideal for individuals who are drawn to serving the community and are ready for a physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging career.
As a Firefighter with the City of Edmonton, you will be part of a team committed to the core values of service, safety, relationships, and teamwork, responding to a variety of emergency situations and making a tangible difference every day.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Firefighting Operations: Combat, extinguish, and mitigate fires under emergency conditions.
- Emergency Response: Respond to and mitigate emergencies safely and efficiently, including hazardous material incidents.
- Medical Aid: Administer emergency medical aid as required.
- Rescue Operations: Perform rescue and extrication operations during emergencies.
- Communication: Communicate effectively, respectfully, and inclusively with individuals from diverse backgrounds at all times.
- Engagement: Engage and interact with community members, providing support and information as needed.
- Teamwork: Collaborate seamlessly within a team environment to achieve shared goals and objectives.
- Physical Demands: Complete repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using physical controls.
- Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and City of Edmonton policies, including compliance with respiratory protective equipment standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent/higher post-secondary education (diploma or official transcripts required).
- If education was obtained outside of Canada, an educational credential assessment certificate (IQAS, WES, CES, etc.) is required.
Medical Certification (one of the following, valid until at least February 10, 2026):
- Certified 80 hrs Advanced First Aid (AFA) Alberta OHS approved course or provincial equivalent
- Certified Medical First Responder (MFR) - 80 hrs AFA OHS approved course
- Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) registration or provincial equivalent
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Primary Care Paramedic (PCP or EMT or EMT-A), or Advanced Care Paramedic (EMT-P) certification (ACP approved, and eligible to apply for ACP registration)
- Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing with active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or provincial equivalent
- Psychiatric Nursing diploma with active registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA) or provincial equivalent
- Practical Nurse diploma with active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or provincial equivalent
- Physician Assistant certification from the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC), plus active registration and in good standing in Alberta or equivalent regulatory body in Canada
- Canadian Armed Forces Training in Combat First Aid for current military members
Proof of enrollment is not accepted. For equivalencies, refer to the official documentation.
Conditions of Employment:
- Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (per NFPA 1582)
- Pass the U of A Firefighter Fitness Testing
- Fit for respirator and compliance with respiratory protective equipment standards
- Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Valid Alberta Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement (or provincial equivalent) before hire; obtain and maintain City Driver’s permit
- Participation in a fire station visit and ride-along
- May be required to undergo a psychological assessment

Preferred Qualifications
- Practical understanding of fire, rescue, dangerous goods, building construction, and Emergency Management Services
- Previous firefighting or emergency response experience
- Experience and/or lived experience working with diverse communities, groups, and organizations (e.g., ethno-cultural, equity-setting, racialized, faith-based, LGBTQ2S+, vulnerable, marginalized, persons with disabilities, all age groups)
- Knowledge and proficiency in a second language or sign language
- Knowledge, training and/or education related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI)
- Previous Indigenous awareness training
- Experience, training, or delivering projects on anti-racism and implicit bias
- Experience in community engagement and community-based volunteerism
Additional Information
Positions Available: Up to 60 permanent full-time positions
Hours of Work: 10-hour day shifts and 14-hour night shifts, on a platoon shift schedule, averaging 42 hours per week.
Salary Range: $36.445 - $62.477 (Hourly); $79,902.020 - $136,974.570 (Annually)
