Description

The City of Delta is seeking dedicated individuals to join Delta Fire & Emergency Services as Career Firefighters. Serving the communities of Ladner, North Delta, and Tsawwassen, this position offers an opportunity to be part of a team committed to public service excellence.

We are looking for community-minded, energetic, and positive candidates who are ready to pursue a fulfilling career as a professional firefighter, helping to ensure the safety and well-being of Delta residents.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response: Respond to fire alarms, emergency calls, and hazardous situations to protect life and property.
  • Fire Suppression: Perform firefighting duties including extinguishing fires, conducting search and rescue, and ventilating structures.
  • Medical Assistance: Provide emergency medical responder (EMR) services and administer first aid at incident scenes.
  • Hazardous Materials Response: Respond to hazardous materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction incidents at the operations level as per NFPA 472.
  • Community Engagement: Participate in community events, public education, and fire prevention initiatives.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, clean, and maintain firefighting equipment, vehicles, and personal protective gear.
  • Training: Attend and participate in ongoing training sessions to maintain skills and certifications.
  • Teamwork: Work collaboratively as part of a team under sometimes stressful and dangerous conditions.
  • Physical Fitness: Maintain the physical and medical fitness required to perform firefighting duties according to established standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Legal Requirements:

  • Legal entitlement to work in Canada with supporting documentation (Canadian Birth Certificate, Passport, Permanent Resident Card, or Landed Immigrant Card)

Education:

  • High school graduation or equivalent

Certifications:

  • Certificate of Completion of NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2 from an approved Pro Board or IFSAC accredited firefighter training program
  • NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents - Operations Level
  • Current BC EMA Licensing Board Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Licence or higher (PCP, ACP)

Driver’s License:

  • Valid BC Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement (or proof of obtaining by the interview stage)
  • Driver’s Abstract for the most recent five years, dated within 15 days prior to application submission

Experience:

  • Community volunteer experience

Physical and Medical Fitness:

  • Meet requirements of NFPA 1582, including vision and hearing standards (20/30 corrected binocular vision, 20/100 uncorrected binocular vision or better, normal hearing without artificial aids)

Background:

  • No conviction for a criminal offence related to the job of a Firefighter

Preferred Qualifications

  • NFPA 472/1072 Technician Level for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents
  • NFPA 1006 Technical High Angle Rope Rescue – Awareness, Operations, or Technician Level
  • NFPA 1006 Confined Space Rescue – Awareness, Operations, or Technician Level
  • NFPA 1006 Auto Extrication/Vehicle Rescue
  • NFPA 1006 Swift Water Rescue
  • Wildland Fire Fighting Certification
  • Completion of other Fire Service related courses or programs
  • Fire related work and/or volunteer experience related to firefighting
  • Experience or training in Emergency Services (Police, Coast Guard, EMS, Military, Search and Rescue, Work Experience Programs)
  • Construction-related trades experience
  • Heavy equipment operation or truck driving experience (Class 1, 2, or 3 license)
  • Coaching, teaching, or instructional experience
  • Fluency in languages other than English
  • Lifesaving Society certifications (Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard)
