Description

The Burnaby Fire Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join its team as Firefighters at the Burnaby #1 Fire Station in Burnaby, British Columbia. As part of the Community Safety Department, Firefighters are responsible for providing comprehensive fire-related emergency services that protect the lives and property of Burnaby citizens.

In addition to responding to emergency calls and extinguishing fires, Firefighters play an active role in public education and fire prevention efforts to promote safety awareness. The department values integrity, reliability, motivation, continuous learning, and a deep commitment to serving the public within a collaborative team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Respond to emergency calls including fires, medical emergencies, and other incidents requiring fire department intervention.
  • Extinguish fires and perform fire suppression activities to protect life and property.
  • Participate in public education and fire prevention initiatives to raise community awareness about fire safety.
  • Maintain equipment and ensure readiness of all firefighting apparatus and tools.
  • Attend ongoing training and demonstrate a continuous willingness to learn and improve skills relevant to firefighting and emergency response.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment, demonstrating integrity, honesty, reliability, motivation, and commitment to public service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant status
  • Minimum High School graduation or equivalent
  • Valid BC Class 3 Driver’s Licence (automatic vehicles) without restrictions, with air brake endorsement
  • NFPA 1001 certification
  • No more than 6 points on your safe driving record in the last 3 years at time of application
  • No convictions of a relevant criminal offense for which a pardon has not been granted
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current/valid First Responder Certificate (formerly FR3) or higher
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)

Selection Process Key Dates:

  • Interviews: June 29 – July 13, 2026
  • 2-day Orientation: Group 1: September 12 & 19; Group 2: September 13 & 20; Group 3: September 14 & 21
  • Physical Abilities Test: Walk-through September 26, Test September 27, 2026
  • Ride-Along: October 3 – October 25
  • Fire Chief interviews: November 9 – 13
  • Recruit class start date: Anticipated January 11, 2027
