Description

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) and Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue (KBRFR) are seeking qualified and ambitious individuals for two term, full-time Firefighter or Firefighter-Mechanic positions in Trail, BC. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Firefighting and Emergency Response:
    • Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls as directed
    • Execute firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services according to department protocols
    • Operate firefighting and rescue equipment safely and effectively
    • Assist in hazardous material incidents and vehicle extrications
  • Team Collaboration and Training:
    • Participate in ongoing training, education sessions, and drills
    • Work as part of a team to achieve departmental objectives
    • Contribute to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace
  • Equipment and Facility Maintenance:
    • Inspect, clean, and maintain firefighting equipment, vehicles, and facilities
    • Report equipment malfunctions or deficiencies promptly
  • Public Safety and Community Engagement:
    • Promote fire prevention, safety, and public awareness initiatives
    • Engage with the community during non-emergency events
  • Firefighter-Mechanic (additional duties):
    • Perform maintenance, repair, and inspection of heavy duty or commercial transport firefighting vehicles
    • Ensure all fire rescue vehicles meet safety and operational standards

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Certifications:

  • Proof of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • NFPA 1001, Firefighter Level II with appropriate IFSAC or Pro Board Seals
  • Valid BC Emergency Medical Assistance Licensing Board (EMALB) License – First Responder III (minimum)

Licenses and Driving Record:

  • Valid Class 3 Driver's License with air brake endorsement or equivalent (automatic transmission accepted)
  • Current driver's abstract (dated no more than 60 days prior to application closing date) with a record demonstrating responsible and safe driving behavior
  • No DUI infractions in the past five years, no more than six points, and no 24-hour roadside prohibition in the last two years

Legal and Security Requirements:

  • Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector check, dated within 6 months of posted date; no relevant criminal charges or convictions without a pardon
  • Legal entitlement to work in Canada (Canadian birth certificate, passport, or current Permanent Resident Card)

Medical Standards:

  • Vision and hearing that meet NFPA 1582 Chapter 6 criteria (Color vision safe, 20/30 corrected binocular vision and 20/100 uncorrected binocular vision or better, normal hearing without artificial aids)

Firefighter-Mechanic Required Additional Qualifications:

  • Certification of B.C. or inter-provincial red seal trades qualification in heavy duty or commercial transport mechanics
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a journeyman heavy duty or commercial transport mechanic
  • Valid Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate or inter-provincial (or out of province) equivalency

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate of Qualification – Emergency Vehicle Technician (for Firefighter-Mechanic position)
