Description
Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES) is a team of dedicated professionals delivering a vast array of emergency services to the citizens, businesses, and visitors of Barrie. Originally organized in 1844, BFES has become one of the most respected fire services in Ontario, providing high-level service in fire inspection, code enforcement, fire protection, technical rescue, training, communications, origin and cause investigations, and emergency management planning. As a firefighter, you will be part of a dynamic team responsible for protecting lives, well-being, and property through dedication to life safety, community service, and environmental preservation.
Located at one of the City’s six fire stations, you will respond to fires, fire alarms, technical rescues, hazardous material incidents, medical emergencies, marine incidents, and other emergencies. You will play an integral role in delivering fire protection services through public education, fire safety standards and enforcement, and emergency response, reflecting the corporate values of Strive, Share, and Care, while upholding core accountabilities of Personal Awareness, Teamwork, and Service Excellence.

- Respond to fires and other emergencies including medical, hazardous materials, and marine incidents.
- Participate in public education and fire safety standards enforcement.
- Conduct fire inspections and code enforcement.
- Engage in training and technical rescue operations.
- Collaborate with team members to maintain high standards of public safety and service excellence.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter Level I and II certified
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness certified
- Completion of Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course
- Valid Ontario Class 'D' Driver's Licence
- Successful completion of Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Services
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Ontario Building Code Act (OBCA), and Ontario Fire Code
- Experience in emergency services or related fields such as dispatch services, firefighting, paramedic, police, military, construction, skilled trades, or heavy equipment operations
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite

- Location: One of six fire stations in Barrie
- Hours: Average of 42 hours per week, ability to work a 24-hour shift
- Wage: Yearly Salary: $73,918; Hourly Pay Rate: $33.73
- Benefits: Comprehensive union benefit plan including extended health and dental coverage, life and accident insurance, paid vacation, sick leave plan, OMERS pension plan, and discounted City Fitness Memberships.
