Description
VAA is now recruiting for a regular, full-time Fire Fighter 1 to join our team. Aircraft Fire Fighting requires members to work as a team in a safe, efficient manner and provide a fire-free evacuation area for passengers and crew following an aircraft accident. Fire Fighters respond to emergencies where life, property or the environment is at risk.
Prior to hire, applicants must have recently passed the UVIC Fire Fighter Physical Fitness evaluation (or acceptable equivalent), have minimum 20/30 corrected binocular vision and 20/100 uncorrected binocular vision and normal unaided hearing. Fire Fighters are recruited at the Airport Fire Fighter 1 level. Specific airport and certification training is required to advance to the Airport Fire Fighter 2 level.
Minimum Qualifications

Annual re certification and medical assessments are required. A valid passport is necessary, as travel outside of Canada is a requirement.
This is a union position reporting to a fire Crew Captain. Level 1 Fire Fighters work a 40-hour work week during regular business office hours (Monday – Friday 08:00 – 16:00). After successful completion of airport firefighting certification, a Fire Fighter will be placed on a crew and join the regular shift schedule.
Grade 12 graduation with preference for applicants with some post-secondary. NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter certification.
Valid EMA First Responder Level 3 certification.
Required minimum three years active firefighting experience and valid Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional fire service related certifications including NFPA 1003 would be considered assets.
