Duties and Responsibilities

Our Protective Services department, under new leadership, is seeking a personable, energetic, and team-oriented Fire Prevention and Education Officer to join our team! Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, this position will provide leadership and direction in the development, management, implementation, and administration of all fire prevention and education programs and services to our growing community. This position may be responsible for providing emergency response working alongside our extremely dedicated volunteer members both on and off the fire ground.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate must have a grade 12 diploma, Group B Level 1 certification as a Fire Safety Codes Officer (as prescribed by the Safety Codes Council); NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level 1; and a Class 5 driver’s license with “Q” endorsement. Candidates with NFPA 1001 Levels I and II; NFPA 1041 Level 1; NFPA 1072 Hazardous Material Operations; NFPA 1002 Driver, Pump & Aerial; NFPA 1021 Level 1; BlueCard Incident Command; Medical First Responder, or higher with valid CPR and AED certification would be considered an asset. The successful candidate must have five years of full-time experience with a fire department fire prevention branch, ideally with 3 years’ experience in developing, implementing, and delivering fire prevention services. You have strong knowledge of fire code interpretation and provincial act and regulations relative to the activities of a fire prevention and education officer in the Province of Alberta. All certifications shall be issued by the Safety Codes Council, IFSAC or Pro-Board.

The ideal candidate must have demonstrated knowledge of the National Building and Fire Codes, Alberta Editions, and previous experience delivering public education programs to all age groups. Experience in interpreting the National Fire Protection Association codes and Land Use agreements within the Alberta Municipal Government Act and regulations and bylaws is necessary. It is essential that candidates demonstrate solid written and oral communication and public relations skills; and possess the ability to support the organization in delivering effective and efficient services to internal and external customers. Candidates must have proficient skills in MS Office Suite.

The successful candidate for this position must provide a clear Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector and a clean Driver’s Abstract as a condition of employment, and prior to the commencement of work.
