Description

Nanaimo Fire Rescue is seeking a dedicated Fire Fighter to join their team. Reporting to the Assistant Fire Chief, Operations, and ultimately the Fire Chief, the Fire Fighter plays a key role in improving public safety through emergency response, fire prevention, public education, and incident response.

This position involves performing a variety of duties under hazardous and emergency conditions, while also participating in routine training, community safety initiatives, and equipment maintenance. The Fire Fighter is expected to act with independence and sound judgment, especially in urgent situations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Emergency Response:

  • Responds to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency incidents as directed by a superior officer or senior Fire Fighter.
  • Drives, operates, and maintains various apparatus as assigned.
  • Maintains equipment in good repair following operational policies and guidelines.
  • Performs a variety of duties as directed by superiors.
  • Trains with Nanaimo Fire Rescue on-call Fire Fighters and may instruct training sessions.
  • Works safely and encourages safety among co-workers; reports unsafe conditions.
  • Participates in ongoing training and identifies personal training needs.
  • May perform functions under the Incident Command System and City’s Emergency Program during large scale emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Community Safety:

  • Promotes a culture of public safety in the community.
  • Conducts fire and life safety inspections of buildings and participates in pre-incident planning.
  • Delivers public education programs in schools, businesses, and to the general public.
  • Leads fire station tours and community education events.
  • Educates the community on emergency preparedness.
  • Other duties as assigned.

General Standards:

  • Protects health and safety by following OH&S Program, established procedures, and using protective equipment.
  • Contributes to a respectful, inclusive, and supportive work environment.
  • Adheres to City policies and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Certifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • NFPA 1001 or 1010 Firefighter Level I and II Certification.
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) License.

Licences and Registrations:

  • Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s Licence with air endorsement.
  • Driving record showing responsible and safe driving behavior (less than 6 points in the past 3 years).
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to deal sensitively and respectfully with citizens, co-workers, and mutual aid agencies.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy, including with vulnerable individuals or those with mental health issues.
  • Considerable knowledge of Fire Department apparatus, equipment, and firefighting methods.
  • Considerable knowledge of emergency response practices and responder medical work.
  • Knowledge of building construction and mechanical aptitude.
  • Physical agility, strength, and stamina for arduous work under adverse conditions.
  • Good judgment and calm behavior in emergencies.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including public presentations.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Good computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • University or college diploma or degree in a relevant discipline.
  • NFPA 1002 or 1010, Driver/Operator.
  • Fire Service Instructor certification.

Experience:

  • Experience in public education and community volunteering.
  • Experience and/or training in construction, mechanical trades, or machinery operation.
  • Experience with menu-driven computer software programs.

Additional Certifications:

  • Certificates or training in emergency services such as hazardous materials, high angle rescue, or confined space entry.
  • Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card.
  • Fluency in a second language.
