Description
This is an entry-level position performed under the direction of a Captain and/or Lieutenant in charge of the hall. Responsibilities include firefighting, rescue, first aid, fire prevention, maintaining all fire and rescue equipment and facilities, and responding to other emergencies. Additionally, a Firefighter participates in continuous training activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Responds to emergencies and performs firefighting, rescue, and first aid activities as part of a team.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining the hall, equipment, and quarters.
- Participates in all related training activities.
- Engages in fire safety inspections and fire prevention activities.
- Participates in Fire Rescue Services public education and public relations activities.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Canadian Citizen or legal entitlement to work in Canada.
- Completion of Senior Secondary School and one or more of the following:
- 3 years Post Secondary work experience; or
- Completion of 2nd year Trades Apprenticeship; or
- Completion of 30 Post Secondary Credits; or
- Completion of two full seasons as a Provincial Wildfire Firefighter; or
- Completion of two years of Military service.
- Valid BC Driver's Licence - Class 3 or 1 with air brake endorsement. A driving record demonstrating responsible and safe driving behavior is required. More than six points within the last three years disqualifies an applicant.
- Successful completion of an approved Firefighter Training Program, NFPA 1001 resulting in Firefighter Level 2 Certificate (with IFSAC or PROBOARD accreditation).
- Valid certificate or license in one of the following (valid within one year at the time of applying):
- First Responder Level III (FR III);
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR);
- Primary Care Paramedic (PCP);
- Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP).
Note: A valid British Columbia (BC) Emergency Medical Assistant (EMA) license is required by the time of hiring.
- Far visual acuity: At least 20/30 binocular corrected with contact lenses or spectacles; uncorrected at least 20/100 binocular for hard contact or spectacle wearers (NFPA 1582). Successful long-term soft contact lens wearers are exempt from the uncorrected criterion.
- Peripheral vision: Visual field performance without correction must be 140 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye (NFPA 1582).
- Normal unaided hearing as per NFPA 1582.
- Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and methods used in firefighting, extinguishing, preventing fires, and rescue work.
- Knowledge of first aid and inhalator practices.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations governing Fire Rescue.
- Knowledge of principles and practices involved in training personnel.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance, building construction, wiring, hydraulics, and municipal geography.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to react quickly and remain calm under stress.
- Agility and strength for prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
- Skill in operating and maintaining firefighting and rescue equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Work experience related to firefighter duties (e.g., building construction, mechanical experience, driving large or emergency vehicles, fire service including forest firefighting, first aid, nursing, paramedical experience, teaching, or instructional experience).
- Post-secondary education (academic, technical, or trades).
- Emergency Medical Responder Licence.
- Completion of fire services related courses (e.g., auto extrication, surface water rescue, swift water rescue, high angle/rope rescue, confined space, hazardous material, aircraft fire crash rescue, incident command, critical incident stress).
- Valid BC Driver's Licence - Class 4.
- Volunteer experience in emergency services (e.g., volunteer firefighting, coast guard, search and rescue).
- Community involvement.
