The High Level Fire Department is looking to expand our team with a Full Time Fire Captain. While on shift the Captain will oversee the Work experience Firefighters day to day duties and training, while also working with Senior Leadership on maintaining readiness to respond to emergencies, ensure training needs are met with all Paid on Call staff.
The rank of Captain holds responsibility for supervising and directing subordinate officers and firefighters while conducting emergency & non-emergency firefighting operations. The position is also responsible for assisting in overseeing training with a focus to maintain discipline within the ranks. This work is performed under the direction of the senior leadership team. The Career Captain fulfils the responsibilities of the senior officers in their absence. A high degree of responsibility for the protection of lives, property and the environment is involved.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership within the company structure, supervising subordinate officers and personnel during emergency & non-emergency situations
- Participate in the planning, coordination, and direction of firefighting and rescue activities including actively participating in the delivery of weekly training for paid on call personnel.
- Responsible to ensure on duty staff receive adequate training to meet departmental standards and ensure extra training is delivered where needed to meet standards by coordinating with others.
- Ensures the readiness of apparatus by supervising preventative maintenance programs including daily, weekly and monthly truck checks.
- Ensures that routine maintenance of apparatus and equipment, including, but not limited to, SCBA is completed by arranging same or causing maintenance to be performed through notification of the senior leadership team when deficiencies are identified.
- Ensures company members under their supervision are outfitted with adequate PPE and that the same is properly maintained and inspected on a regular basis in accordance with department guidelines
- Completes required post incident reports/documentation as required in a timely fashion
- Ensures the highest level of service possible to the residents of the fire district by ensuring staff and paid on call members provide courteous customer service to residents
- Administer departmental and Town of High Level policies and procedures and ensure compliance of both career staff and paid on call members
- Responsible for maintaining effective discipline within assigned company structure, managing and documenting minor issues while reporting serious conduct breaches to the senior leadership team for further investigation.
- Manage personnel performance via the monitoring of attendance, performance appraisals and assessments as directed.
- Liaise as needed and maintain harmonious relationships with mutual aid partners, external agencies, Municipalities, Federal and Provincial authorities, organizations and members of the public where necessary.
- Assist with the development of pre-incident plans for target risks and hazards in the community
- Lead the response of subordinate personnel to emergencies and be prepared to assume command of incidents in the absence of senior officers utilizing knowledge and experience to mitigate the emergency with life safety, incident mitigation, and property conservation being the highest priorities.
- Assist with public education and fire prevention activities
- Assist the senior leadership team with ensuring emergency preparedness by participating in the creation of pre-incident plans
- Attend meetings as required.
- Assumes the duties of senior officers in their absence through regular participation in the department’s duty officer rotation
- Provides advice to the senior leadership team regarding long term planning and budgetary requirements.
- Other duties as assigned by the senior leadership team.
- Facilitate ongoing staff training and adherence to accepted safety practices.
- Assist the Workplace Health and Safety Committee in developing and achieving objectives.
- Review Department incident reports and provide areas of improvement and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Investigate Health and Safety Incidents as per the Town’s Health and Safety Program policies and directives.
Minimum Qualifications
- Grade 12 Diploma
- Alberta Class 5 license with air brakes or equivalent
- NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2
- NFPA 472 Operations Certification
- Pump/Aerial Operations Training, NFPA 1002 Pump/Aerial Operator preferred.
- WUI-M/NFPA 1140 or willingness to obtain.
- Fire Service Instructor Certification NFPA 1041 Level 1
- Live Fire Instructor Certification considered an asset.
- Valid Standard First Aid/CPR
- ICS 100/200
- Formal Incident Command/Strategy/Tactics Training, Blue Card certification preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Fire Officer in a municipal fire service
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in a municipal fire service
- Demonstrated record of sound management and decision making.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Sound understanding of Workplace Health & Safety Legislation, Fire Service Standards, Etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Alberta Class 3 with Air Brakes or Equivalent
- NFPA 472 Hazmat Technician
- NFPA 1041 Level 2 Instructor
- ICS 300

The High Level Fire Department Responds to an average of 700 calls a year. These calls range from Medical Co Response, Motor Vehicle Accidents, Structure and Wildland Fires. The department also Hosts one of the Provincial WUI teams and deploys to other incidents around the province.
