Being a firefighter is a challenging and rewarding career for both men and women. A firefighter today must be skilled, competent, professional and able to deal with any kind of emergency. Being a Work Experience Program (WEP) firefighter you will have the opportunity to continually maintain and upgrade your skills through specialized training and emergency situations.
The Big White Fire Department is seeking candidates for the 22nd year of their Work Experience Program. This program is open for applications from January 1, 2023 until the end of the business day, February 28, 2023 with the program scheduled to run from June 5th, 2023 until the end of ski season 2024 (usually mid to late April).
Duties and Responsibilities
-be involved in regular duty shifts
-create and maintain pre-incident plans, public education and participate in company inspections
-participate in specialized training sessions to maintain and enhance their certification and skill levels
-have the opportunity to instruct training courses to regular members in order to further apply and challenge their skills and abilities
-complete regular hall and equipment maintenance as an integral part of the program
-respond to emergency calls as paid-on-call members of the Big White Fire Department
Minimum Qualifications
-NFPA 1001, B.C. Fire Fighter 1 & 2 OR Equivalent
-Pass a criminal records search
-Pass a driver’s license check and a detailed personal reference check
-Doctor’s medical clearance or certificate of fitness (Fit Tech, CPAT, York, etc.)
-CPR “C”, First aid training
-Class 3 Driver’s License
-Air brake endorsement
Preferred Qualifications
-EMA licensed FR, EMR or higher
-Work place first aid OFA 3
-Technical, Trades or Post Secondary education or experience
-Previous Fire Fighting, Wildfire, Rescue or Emergency Medical Responder experience

-NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator/Aerial

-NFPA 1021 – Company Inspections
-Medical First Responder, EMA License
-Emergency Medical Responder, Canadian Red Cross
-Live Fire Training
-NFPA 1006 – Vehicle Extrication
-NFPA 1006 – Low to Steep Angle Rope Recue
-WSPP WFF 1 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety (Wildland Fires)
-SPP-115 Structure Protection Workshop
-ICS 100 (JIBC)
-Emergency Scene Traffic Control, BCMSA
