Duties and Responsibilities

Following the chain of command and under the general direction and direct supervision of a fire suppression captain, the general duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Operate and maintain fire apparatus
  • Maintain fire equipment
  • Perform fire ground operations
  • Perform hazardous material operations
  • Perform rescue operations including auto extrication and water rescue
  • Provide emergency medical care
  • Develop pre-incident plans
  • Perform public education and inspections
  • Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development
  • Perform administrative duties
  • Perform station and grounds maintenance duties
  • Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 18 years of age at time of application
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent
  • Previous or current volunteer, paid on call, or career suppression firefighter experience
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” endorsement with less than 4 demerit points (driver’s abstract must be submitted as a condition of employment)
  • Possess a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification (proof of Pro Board Seal or IFSAC)
  • Possess a NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations certification (proof of Pro Board or IFSAC seal required)
  • Ability to work 24 hour shifts on a rotating basis (including weekends and holidays etc.) Note: the rotating shift pattern may be adjusted during the first year of
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or Emergency Fire Responder (EFR) certification
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in English (verbal and written)
  • Successful completion of fitness and medical testing – York University
  • Ability to swim proficiently – Ontario Fire College Surface Water Rescue / Ice Rescue Swim Test (conducted by WSFES)
  • Ability to work at heights, inside confined spaces and to wear and use supplied safety equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary education degree or diploma in a related field
  • Additional NFPA courses and/or certifications related to the position of suppression firefighter
  • Advanced medical training
  • NFPA 1002 Pump Operations

Additional Information

This full-time position is subject to a 12-month probationary period. Salary as per the current collective agreement (2022).
