Description
The Corporation of the Town of Hawkesbury is seeking a Relief Firefighter to join its dedicated team of career and part-time firefighters. This full-time position offers the opportunity to serve the community through fire prevention, public education, and emergency response.
As a Relief Firefighter, you will work primarily on 12-hour day shifts in rotation, supporting your teammates in emergency and non-emergency situations, and ensuring the safety and well-being of Hawkesbury residents.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Emergency Response: Respond to fires, emergency calls, and other incidents as required.
- Team Collaboration: Work within a team environment to perform firefighting and dispatch functions.
- Public Education: Engage with members of the public to provide fire prevention and safety education.
- Fire Prevention: Participate in fire prevention activities to ensure the safety of the community.
- Shift Work: Work 12-hour day shifts on rotation, with potential for reassignment to other shifts to cover extended absences.
- Call Backs: Respond to emergency calls outside normal work hours as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Language: Must be fluently bilingual in French and English (oral and written).
- Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (preference for pre-service firefighter program graduates).
- Driver’s License: Valid DZ Ontario driver’s license or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of five (5) years in a structural fire department.
- Physical Fitness: Must comply with physical requirements of employment, including a swim test.
- Medical: Must comply with medical requirements at the time of the medical exam.
- Certifications: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 2 or Quebec Education Ministry Firefighter Diploma 5191 or 5322.
- Hazardous Materials: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations Level or Quebec Education Ministry Firefighter Diploma 5191 or 5322.
- First Aid: Current First Responder & BLS certificate from the Canadian Red Cross or equivalent.
- Residency: Must reside within a non-prejudicial delay to emergency calls and remain so for the duration of employment, available to respond to calls within prescribed time limit.
Preferred Qualifications
- Trades Experience: Construction, framing, roofing, HVAC, electrical, etc.
- Pump Operator: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 1002 or Quebec Education Ministry Firefighter Diploma 5191 or 5322.
- Fire Inspector: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 1031 or Quebec Education Ministry Firefighter Diploma 5191 or 5322.
- Public Fire and Life Safety Educator: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 1035 or Quebec Education Ministry Firefighter Diploma 5191 or 5322.
- Fire Officer: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 1021 Level 1.
- Emergency Services Instructor: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 1041 Level 1 or Quebec Education Ministry Firefighter Diploma 5191 or 5322.
- Emergency Telecommunicator: IFSAC or PRO BOARD NFPA 1225 Level 1 & 2.
- Incident Management System: IMS or ICS 100 and 200.
Additional Information
Salary: Entry level annual salary is $73,163 based on 42 hours per week.
- Benefits: Insurance coverage, Employee Assistance Program, defined benefit pension plan.
- Schedule: Full-time, average of 42 hours per week, 12-hour day shifts in rotation. Includes weekends and public holidays.
- Location: Must live within Town limits or a reasonable distance from the fire station.
