Probationary Firefighter – Hamilton – 2026

The City of Hamilton is seeking a Full-Time Probationary Firefighter to join their Healthy & Safe Communities department. As a firefighter, you will be responsible for performing various fire ground operations, including rescue missions, fire suppression, and community engagement through public fire prevention education. The position offers a chance to work in a dynamic team environment while ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform fire ground operations under the direction of a Supervisor, including searching for, rescuing, and evacuating individuals.
• Protect exposures, confine, control, and extinguish fires to minimize property loss.
• Conduct rescue operations, applying first aid and stabilizing patients for transport to medical facilities.
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations, including medical calls and technical rescues.
• Control hazardous materials to prevent injury and property damage.
• Operate fire apparatus safely and efficiently, employing defensive driving principles.
• Inspect fire apparatus and equipment daily to ensure readiness and report deficiencies.
• Participate in fire safety inspections and maintain station duties, including cleaning and inventory management.
• Deliver Public Fire Prevention Education and engage with the community.
• Operate communication equipment to transmit and receive messages.
• Assist in developing pre-fire plans and participate in specialty training programs.
• Perform administrative duties to maintain records and comply with legislation.
• Work in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and departmental policies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Grade 12 or approved equivalent.
• Ability to follow rules, regulations, and procedures of the Hamilton Fire Department.
• Capability to learn and apply fire extinguishing and rescue techniques.
• Ability to conduct inspections and cleaning of firefighting equipment.
• Effective communication skills in English, both orally and written.
• Ability to make decisions in emergency situations.
• Physical strength and stamina to perform arduous work and operate firefighting equipment.
• General knowledge of hazardous materials and related job subjects.
• Ability to work in confined spaces or high places.
• Current certification in “Standard” First Aid with CPR Level “C”.
• Valid Class DZ Ontario Driver’s Licence with zero demerit points.
• Availability to work rotating shifts.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in emergency response or firefighting.
• Additional certifications in firefighting or rescue techniques.

Additional Information:

• Compensation: $35.806 - $60.044
• This position requires a valid Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence.
• Medical assessment and Police Vulnerable Sector Check are required if moving forward in the process.
• Photo ID is required at time of testing.
